$25.00 is an excellent price for an adult. Sexing is done by the wiskers on the side of the gills and by the odontes on the fins. Males wiskers are more pronounced at an earlier age, the get spines on their body and the males also get a bit larger than the females. I paid $26.00 for a 4cm jeuvenile here in Toronto

That's awsome, thanks so much for your help. I've been to a few different pleco sites now and gave up after a lengthy search. I'll follow your advice and just post the pics when I get back from my meeting tonight. I will post the results for sure. I knew it wasn't a zebra so I haven't bought it yet ::D: :;): . I wanted to do my research first to find out if it was something I wanted. I always research before grabbing, hard to fight the impulse but I learned the hard way about a year ago with a chinese algae eater.

Ahhhh, your very smart then  Research first ! Good steps to take :GEEK:

OK, be sure to let me know what you find out, I will keep an eye over there as well, I am a member there too

no idea on this one... I would almost think it was of the same family as the Gibbicepts but not sure. Will be interested in finding out what it is.

Looks like them to me, yup :)
Especially this pic:
http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/image.php?image_id=593

The ones in your picture are just lighter on color, could be stress coloration, and I think I see some fin damage on the dorsal of the closest one in the pic ??

I see some one at plecofanatics says they are really colored nice ! So... I would not buy them as zebras, but as Gibbiceps... and dont pay too much thats for sure ! I would say $10 to $20 max each?? (not too sure what they go for though...??)

I do have a 125 gal but don't want anything too big. It says these guys get to 18". I'm going to have to pass. I'd rather have a few small than one large. I'm really focusing a lot of planting this tank and don't want any huge tails ripping things up on me. *sigh* maybe the next find will be the one LOL . Thanks again for the help!!!

I would look at planet catfish for a few hours and go through the full L-cat-elogue image by image till you have a list of ones that you are interested. At that piont take the L numbers, scientific name and common names of the plecs you like to your LFS and see if they can get those varieties. Also look at local breeders (www.canadapleco.com (http://www.canadapleco.com)) and on www.aquabid.com (http://www.aquabid.com) (the is also www.pnaquaria.ca (http://www.pnaquaria.ca)).

That is basically what I did and am slowly amassing my collection. This way I also became slightly informed about the plecs I wanted and the ones I did not.

Yeah... get the breeder up here in Canada to actually start advertising. Apparently there is a huge CAOAC breeders list and I haven't heard of one of them breeding or advertising. We for some reason don't have the networks set up for it. Plus the Breeders list is a bunch of name with no other information beyond what club they are a member of.

Always get species names/L#'s. There are many Plecos out there with the common name 'Zebra', all or in part. There's a Yellow Zebra, Spotted Zebra, False Zebra, etc etc etc. So he may not be trying to say that they're THE Zebra Pleco, he's just throwing out a common name.

KnaveTO
Aug 9th 2007, 10:32 PM
Even then be careful with L#s

There is the L173 that has two variations... one is Hypancistrus zebra and the other is Hypancistrus sp. Both look fairly the same, have the same size but the true L046 has straight vertical stripes and the other L173 is wavy.

Can you tell that plecos are a passion... lol?

We for some reason don't have the networks set up for it.

We do now, its called Canadian Aquarium Connection :;): . What I have found is that I know some private breeders, and other people know some private breeders, and so on and so on and so on... With one place to connect, we can hook each other up.

The other thing that I have found is that many of these people are true hobby breeders. They prefer to breed for fun and will trade within their club or give the fish to friends, but that's it. I get a lot of my fish from people like that actually.

Then there's shipping-phobias, or they just don't want the hassle. But if we know enough people, someone is going to live close enough who will ship them for us, be it for a trade or whatever in return.

Help people out when you can and people will help you out. Waving a credit card around or just being nice to someone because you want their fish is pretty superficial and it just doesn't get us far in this hobby. What goes around, comes around. I was friends with many US breeders long before I could get fish from them and they know that. Once I could get fish from there, they were happy to help me. I do things for them whenever I can too.

Be a good hobbyist and you'll meet good hobbyists. ::D: That's the trick.
