Surprise! Look what I just found in my tank on the glass:
http://www.canadianaquariumconnection.com/jb_images/babypleco.jpg
It's a baby White-tipped BN pleco (only about 3/4 in from nose to tip of tail... hence the fuzzy picture).::D:
I have not been trying to breed them. I got 3 from mykiss last year... and as it turns out I have one male and 2 females. They don't actually even have 'proper' caves (because my clown pleco resides in the only one... a hollowed out piece of driftwood). Their caves are little niches created between rocks. The male can't actually even fully fit in his 'cave'. And so I was extremely surprised and excited to find a baby.:red_dance: (my very first non-livebearer fry! :wideeyed: )
Now my first question is, how many fry do you think might have hatched and survived under the circumstances? (It is a 70g very densely planted community tank).

First off congrats on the new addition!
If you have one you probably have a few others as the parents are very protective of their eggs. I am kinda surprised you didn't see your male chasing anything and everything away from 'his' portion of the tank as the males rear the eggs and young and are quite territorial during mating. Keep an eye out over the next few days as this little guy is probably the first developed... the others might still be in the 'cave' with dad.

Congrats, Jay! It is a nice surprise to see something like that, especially when you weren't even expecting it. Let us know the final count if you can.

His cave is near the back corner of the tank in some rocks behind a bunch of plants with the entrance out of view. So it doesn't surprise me that I didn't see him guarding it. However, it could explain why I haven't seen much of him lately. He's probably been back there being a good papa.

Congrats !
You may have a few more in there, they can have batches frm around 20 to 50+ of fry, but mine usually have around 30 or so each spawn.
And it all depends on what other fish are in the tank. I had mine spawn in the community tank once, and when I saw the fry, they were getting picked off one by one by my angel fish !! :( I was quick and was able to rescue around 10... but the rest were fast snacks.
So if you have bigger mouths in the tank, they will get eaten if found.

Well the count tonight is up to 5 baby plecos. And papa is wandering all over the tank so I guess all of them have been allowed out on there own. Only time will tell how many there actually are.

If that's the case, I want to deliver them in person with camera in hand. Just gotta get a pic of the look on hubby's face when a billion plecos land on your doorstep.
I imagine his response would be something like this: :radar: :Worried::Eek: :swoon:. And then mine would be: :BOLTS:

Aug 15th 2007, 02:45 PM
And then you would have to move to make room for all those tanks, right? Which means you can expand your fish breeding, and then .... and then .... :chatterbox:

Yup! A vicious cycle, that's for sure. And I'm hooked. But of course you know I can control this obsession with fish :Fibbing: . Well, maybe not me but my bank account will keep it in check. :;):

Ah yes... but do hide those credit cards too.... lol
Can we keep this in check? I thought I could when I decided to get 1 tank... I am now up to 5 either in my place or on order with the LFS. But I WILL stop there... I must!

Ahh yes, you're in good company. My first tank was a 20g. I labelled it 'Live Art'. I figured I could have a small tank with some pretty fish to enjoy.
However, something kind of messed up my plans. I bought livebearers! :twitcy: The theory at the time was that I would not need to buy more fish as livebearers would keep my tank filled at all times and the surplus I could take to a LFS. So much for the theory... I became hooked on genetics and breeding and snails... and other pretty fish... and.... and... Well, you get the drift.
Of course now my plecos have decided to initiate me to the egg-layer side of things. It never ends, I tell you!
