And he is so cute! Now I'll just see how many did hatch. I love new fishy babies. Now I have to go do some reading as to feeding. I don't think I need to feed for a couple of days cuz they are still using up their egg sack?

I know how you feel Kat... I have these wonderfully coloured German Blue Rams that have spawned twice in the last few weeks and they can't seem to get their fry beyond the wiggler stage! I am glaring at them I read these birth announcements...:(

Rams are so pretty! I just started to look into those and the husband saw the familiar glare and promptly dragged me out of the store...I am currently obessed with finding starlight & marble plecs.

Congrats !! Baby plecos are soo cute !! And yes, they will eat off the yolk sacs for a bit, but usually when they start to leave the cave from the Dads care, then they are getting close to being ready to eat.

On a side note, I always tried to have my youngest plecos in well established tanks with lots of plants/dfiftwood/rocks etc....

WHY? Well, this is just a theory of mine, so I am not 100% sure on this... but, the one and only time I tried to raise pleco fry in a newly setup (but well cycled) tank, I ended up loosing most of them, and the only ones that lived were ones I moved into an older tank. I think this is because when they were that young, I never ever saw them touch the food I offered them... and have only seen the youngest fry scrapping away on items in the tank for algae I assume....

SO, again, just a guess, but I think young pleco fry only eat algae... and as they get older then they start taking the food you offer them. As from all of the batches of plecos I raised to date, I observed the same thing. The smallest ones only grazed around the tank, and not on any offered food.

Not sure if that is helpful to anyone... as again, it is just an observation and guess on my part...

Oh, and I would die for starlight or peppermint BN's !!

That makes some sense about having pleco fry in a well established tank. Right now they are in a 29 gallon with a piece of driftwood and a bit of java fern. It's a clean tank as that is where I have my livebearer fry growing up in. No substrate or plants. Not sure what I shall do yet, I'll wait and see how many I end up with. Still 2.

Well they may do just fine in that tank

Good luck with them !

Thanks Min. I may pull a few from the tank and put in my 90 gallon, lots of good food for them in there. And will be interesting to see if there is any difference in growth between the two tanks.

I noticed a big difference in growth between temps. Barb, if they are coming out with egg sack then they probably just snuck by dad. The others may hang around with dad till the egg sack is pretty used up. So don't panic if you don't see any for a couple of days. If there is not a lot of algae in the tank then try and algae wafer or spirulina flake.

Oh yes Congrats, these little guys are so adorable.:pompom: :Applaud:  :Applaud: :pompom:

What did yours spawn in?

Does the pic show if he has an egg sack still? I'm thinking yes, a bit. Dad spawned in a 4" clay pot inverted with it tipped up just about an inch. I have no heater going in the tank at the moment, the temp is 76'ish.

I am thinking that orange tummy may be the egg sac. Is it kind of like jelly. I have never seen my reg bns with a yolk sack, only my albinos.

Gack, you guys are killing me with what is available out there!!http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/36/36_19_5.gif Sometimes living on an Island has it's drawbacks. Great find, Ross. Post a pic once he settles in his new home.

Starlights float around BC too - I have one in my tank as we speak. I had several but they were wild-caught and didn't like my higher pH I suspect. Not the kind with the white seam though, which I would prefer.

Today, there were 8 little ones out. I lifted and tilted the pot carefully and took a look. There are probably 25-30 baby plecos!!http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/36/36_1_34.gif

So I should start putting in some zucchini, blanched for them to nibble on?

pics pics pics pics

alright I will calm down now... lol

you don't necessarily have to blanch it. If you don't it does allow you extra time to have it in the tank for your babies to eat. Besides blanching has been proven to remove nutrients... I just slice it and attach it to a veggie clip or a stainless steel knife purchased just for that use.

They are doing great, buzzing around the tank.
My reg and my shortfinned albino bns all have little ones not too. No shortage of babies at this house.
