View Full Version : GPS Advice

So my parents have decided to get me a GPS for my birthday. :red_dance: Because I have always been directionally challenged in my own home town being here has proved a bit frustrating and scary at times. Especially when Markus is away and I was going on interviews an hour or so away and had no one to call when I was detoured or lost etc. The last time I tried to drive home for a quick visit it wasn't too much fun either. So needless to say this will be an extremely helpful thing for me to have.
I have no experience with GPS and while I don't need all the bells and whistles I would like one that I can depend on that has both US and Canadian maps since I do travel between the two countries at least once a month. I'd like an idiot proof one that says BING turn left etc. Does anyone have any advice/reccomendations?
Thanks! I'd really appreciate your input!

Ditto... I use my mapbook... I'm technology challenged...lol. There's bound to be someone who can give you some pointers in what to look for.

Sorry, don't have/use one either. If you have access to back issues of Consumer Reports (our local library has them), the Feb/07 issue did a review of the units that gave great pointers in choosing one unit over another depending on what you're looking for in a unit. Ratings too with a couple of best buys: TomTom One $450 & Garmin StreetPilot i5 $350 (all US$). Best overall for portability and performance Garmin Nuvi 350 $600.

Just in case you haven't received your GPS unit, I just received this month's copy of Consumer Reports and lo and behold and updated ratings of GPS devices. (October issue). Like a lot of new electronics, prices are dropping and more features avail in the lower $$ spectrum.

But what a way to while the time away, visiting fish stores. Kat, you're going to have to take pics of all the new livebearers you've gotten in the last month. Well, maybe wait till Monday after you visit the new fish stores this weekend.

I've gotta get some better lighting in the basement. Until then they are all black blobs. :(

If you're not back in three days we'll come looking for you.
Oh not because we are concerned about you, its because if you've been gone that long, you must have found something REALLY GOOD!

More then likely it would end up at your house at some point anyways. The GPS is great! Found 2 new lfs, little stock in what I was interested in but fun none the less.

I know next to nothing about them, other than the general purpose, but if they help find fish stores then I'll add it to the list. :Letter4Santa:
