Okay... first of whoever said babies were delicate little creatures that need pristine water conditions and the like... LIED!

I was cleaning out my filters (Rena Filstars if you want to know... great filter by the way!) and in the one on my 65 gallon tank I found 4 baby swordtails quite alive and well. I did find one that was dead :(

Getting them was nice and easy... grabbed my net and coaxed them into it. They are now in my empty QT tank with lots of java moss there for them to nibble and hide in.

My other system (the 50 gallon with the RCS... see where I am going... :twitcy: )I have seen a number of baby RCS. My dilema here is how to get them out of there... can I use the very fine net I have?

I'm not sure about the net. I don't know for sure but maybe you could use a small gravel vac and gently siphon them just into the vac end to transfer them.:Dunno: Just an idea... have never done this myseelf (having never tried to move shrimp) so take it for what it's worth.

If you have a large bucket or tub you can fill with clean or aged water, you could gently rinse the cannister and filter pads into the bucket.

Then net the shrimp out of the bucket.

It might be a good idea to cut a filter sponge to cover the intake of your cannister.

Well ended up trying the tubing approach... hope it worked...

By they way... ever taken a good hard long look at the water in your canister filter. You should. If you ever need a started culture for what appears to be some sort of micro worm and daphnia or something like that... there it is... lol But the babies in the QT tank got a bit of a treat... lol

And yes... there is once again a piece of foam around the intake of my filter.

Yep, you can net them. Or if you have filter floss put clumps of it bunched up in the tanks, the rcs will cling to it then plop it in the net. Or if you have a sponge filter do the same. Hope this helps.

I have de-legged shrimp with nets before...oops, apparently they grow back though:smile:

One shrimp aficionado I met used a gravel vac with no hose. Sink it down over the shrimp, then plug the top end and lift it out. Use other hand to keep shrimp in and stop spillage.

I use a brine shrimp net for baby shrimp and fish too. Nothing creative there...lol.

I have used a turkey baster to suck up fry before, but I'm not sure if it would work with shrimp.
I use a new baster from the dollar store and it is only used for aquarium use hehe. It's also a very good tool to use in betta tanks to remove extra food (uneaten peas, pellets, etc...)

Two thumbs up for the turkey baster. Those things are great to have when you have smaller tanks (or big filters).
