View Full Version : Washing dishes (not for the faint of heart)

I was washing dishes today, and a tall drinking glass broke as I stuck my hand in to wash it... I did not think I had gotten cut, as I felt nothing, then I looked and blood was flowing ! I was just gonna try a band-aid, but it was bleeding so bad, and I had no band-aids big enough

It happened right up at the top of my first finger at the knuckle where it joins to the hand... I wrapped it in a dish cloth, and it got soaked pretty fast....

I called my sis and she drove me out to the hospital, and they took me right in... and half an hour later the Doctor tended to me. The Dr. laughed and asked if I had tried to cut my finger off ! LOL! I did not even feel the needle that freezes your hand.. just a pressure as the shots were given. The nurse and Dr were both very nice and light hearted, and they tired to keep me talking to keep my mind off of what was going on.... but the last stitch hurt a tad, and the Dr was just telling me about a fireman he had stitched up who had fainted... and I got woozy...and started feeling weird, and they got me to lay down. So, I did NOT faint, but it was close !

So I got 5 stitches today in my hand.... ! First time ever getting stitches, but I am proud of myself cause it did not hurt at all! It was just weird... even the cut itself did not hurt.. and even now, just a throbbing sensation, no real pain. The sensations of the stitches pulling on the wound and being tied was weird... and I did not look, or watch.. I knew that would have put me into the blackness!

Oh, and I had to get a tetanus shot as well, in my hip... and I did not feel a thing with that either!

So I am supposed to go back in a week to get the stitches taken out... and I am not allowed to get it wet... so I guess no water changes for me for a week! Oh no! I will go through withdrawal now.... as I am OCD about my water changes I think... *hehehe*...less feedings for now... and I am sure the fish will be fine though....

ps... they told me at the hospital that there was a person out there the day before getting stitches for the exact same reason, so be careful washing your dishes ! Go plastic !! :;):

Glad you are ok!

Cuts can be a nasty thing, expecially when in an unsanitary place like the kitchen sink full of dirty dishes.

Awww shoot. I'm really sorry to hear about your terrible day. I hope it heals quickly. I teach first aid for a living and always make folks blush when I tell them that if you have a severe cut and losing blood. If you don't have dressings in your house, grab the old sanitary napkins or diapers. both are perfect for the occasion and are cleaner than anything else.

If I was closer i'd come and help with water changes. Hope all is well soon!!!

I once cut my finger clear to the bone chopping lettuce. Stragely enough didn't get a drop of blood in the lettuce. I guess I shouldn't mention about the time I cracked my head open practicing starting dives in the pool... and getting the stitches done with no freezing what so ever

Min glad you are okay and you did not feel much. Those glass cuts are nasty. I have had two of them, no stitches though, Dad was able to get the bleeding stopped and patched me up, left nasty scars though. Actually he was there both times I did it. When buying glasses try to get the thicker ones. Those thin ones break very easily.

Thanks guys... it is a bit sore now, throbbing.

I never thought of grabbing anything sanitary, I just grabbed the nearest thing, a dirty dish towel... yup ! Then after that one was soaked through I grabbed a clean one . Glad I got the tetanus shot  (No pads or diapers in here anyways )

And KnaveTO, no freezing?? Why ?

I do not know why the glass busted as I put my hand into it, it may have been cracked but I was not looking for cracks, anywho... the action of my hand going down in and the glass breaking at the same time made for a nasty wound... it was deep and wide, and almost like I tried to start peeling a thick layer of skin off of my hand! Yikes !! Even the nurse was surprised it kept bleeding for so long. But you know, I had just been holding the towel around my hand on the wound and was not applying much pressure, until my sis picked me up and asked if I was putting pressure on it.. and I am like Duh !! That probably would have helped !! I have never had official first aid training, but have read the first aid training books.... guess when your a bit freaked out it is hard to think.... :chatterbox:

Yikes, what a day! Glad it wasn't a worse cut. Try not to stress too much about water changes, probably easy right now cuz your hand is hurting, but later, a good excuse for others in the family to step up and do them (you directing the proper way, of course lol).
