Common Name - Tico, Dwarf Merry Widow

Scientific Name - Phallichthys tico

Family - Poeciliidae

Location - Central America: Nicaragua, Costa Rica. Lake Nicaragua and its tributaries.

Sexing - Males are smaller and have a gonopodium.

Environment - Tropical, 24 to 28°C. Minimum recommended tank size 20 gallons. PH 7.0 to 8.0, prefers slightly hard, alkaline water.

Breeding - Livebearer, females produce broods of 10 to 60 fry, approx. every 4 to 6 weeks.

Size - Females approx 4cm, males are smaller.

Notes - From my reading and short experience with these fish, I can say they are a peaceful, shy, elegant fish. They are easily distinguishable in a community tank by the black spot on the rear of their dorsal fin.
Very hard to photograph because they hide from activity and noise around the tank. Better pictures can be found here - http://www.britishlivebearerassociation.co.uk/Database/Phallichthys/Phallichthys%20tico.htm
They accept a variety of flake and pellet foods, unicellular algae (Spirulina) and veggies should be included in their diet.
Tico's should be in a heavily planted peaceful community or species aquarium with very slow or no water current.
