Young Mature Male
Common Name - Blackbarred Limia, Humpback Limia
Scientific Name - Limia nigrofasiata
Family - Poeciliidae
Location - Central America: Haiti, Lake Miragoane
Sexing - Males have a gonopodium and grow a hump on their back.
Environment - Tropical, 24 to 28°C. Minimum recommended tank size 20 gallons. PH 7.0 to 8.0, prefers slightly hard, alkaline water. Found in both fresh and brackish water.
Breeding - Livebearer, females produce broods of 20 to 40 fry, approx. every 4 to 6 weeks. Fry become sexually mature at about 5-6 months.
Size - Females approx 7cm, males are slightly shorter at about 6cm.
Notes - An attractive active fish that would do well in most community aquariums. Provide hiding places for the females as the males are relentless in their pursuit of females. Keep at least 3 females to each male.
Humpback Limias are very active eaters, rather than swim along the top of the water to gather food, they will dart at their food, darting from piece to piece. They are omnivores and will readily accept any foods. Be sure to include some veggies and spirulina in their diet.
The hump on the backs of the males is a fatty tissue rather than a spinal deformity. Genetic analysis has shown that the Lima nigrofasiata and the Limia perugia diverged from a common ancestor a relatively short time ago.
They will do best in a planted aquarium with little or no water current.
