Common name: Severum (gold, green, red shoulder, turquoise varieties)
Scientific name: Heros severus, Cichlasoma severum
Family:Cichlidae
Origin: Amazon
Adult size: 8"
Tank Specs:
Minimum Tank Size: 40G,
Water Parameters (PH): pH: 6.5-7.2
Temperature: 22°c-27°c
Special Requirements: A tank with alot of hiding places is best. Planted tanks are ok, but there are many plants which the sevrum will enjoy snacking on. Suitable Tankmates: Other semi agressive fish which are able to take agression but will not be too agressibe towards the severum. Severums dont deal with stress well
Minimum Group Size: Any (pairs for breeding)
Diet:Omnivore (more herbivore than anything)
Sexing: Positive sexing can be told by looking at the genital papillae. Males usually have pointed fins and spots on their head. Females have a dark patch on the dorsal fin
Breeding and Reproduction: These fish do not pair off as readily as most s/a cichlids. It is difficult to get them to pair off and breed. If you can get them to pair off they will need plenty of space to swim and prefer to be alone in pairs when they spawn (not in a cummunity tank). Light coloured gravel and decor will cause them stress. They like to spawn in clay pots. They can lay as many as 1000 eggs.
Notes: These fish need a very tentative owner. They are very suceptable to disease and need good water quality. They are awsome fish with great personalities. Different varieties are available.
