Yes, that's weird. I can't somehow see the bathing suit as catching on, but who knows. But as far as using the fish skin to make leather, why not? If we're eating the fish and the skin is just waste, then why not use it. (just as we sue cowhide).

Maybe it's a cultural thing, but as a whole I think Asians tend to utilize more of the animal as food and less of it is wasted compared to North America. In this case, fish skin is very rarely wasted. In fact, cooked the right way, it is the tastiest part. Maybe it's just me. But I've eaten some things that would turn most other people's stomachs.
