I just picked up some Presidents Choice Green Bleach, on the lable it lists that it is chlorine free. I'm a bleach cleaning fanatic but since I started keeping fish I'm very conscious of air freshners, candles, cleaning productsthat would pollute the air and be harmful to my critters. The result, I normally will only use bleach sparingly on nice windy days when I could open all the windows and doors if I had to. Not only is the green bleach pleasant to smell its a better choice for the enviornment and its colour safe. I have a bunch of river rocks soaking in some at the moment.

Here's a link.

Does it disinfect or just clean?

Its 100% hydrogen peroxide, for peroxide to act as a disinfectant, high concentrations are required. I already tossed the bottle so I'll have a look then next time I head in to the Canadian Superstore.

I shall have to check into it. People often buy bleach to 'whiten' fabrics... not as a disinfectant. My concern is that this product might just do that and no disinfect. Shall try to dig up info tomorrow after much :coffee2:

I emailed them asking exactly what the content of peroxide is.

Peroxide is sold as a first aid product at 3%!
100% would be a pretty skookum disinfectant! I think it would also melt clothing instantly, lol. I'm betting the person meant to say 100% chlorine free...

From Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydrogen_peroxide):

3% H2O2 is used medically for cleaning wounds
...
Commercial peroxide, as bought at the drugstore in a 2.5%-3% solution, can be used to remove bloodstains from fabrics, although it will bleach or discolor many fabrics.
...
About 50% of the world's production of hydrogen peroxide in 1994 was used for pulp- and paper-bleaching. Other bleaching applications are becoming more important as hydrogen peroxide is seen as an environmentally benign alternative to chlorine-based bleaches.
...
Laboratory tests conducted by fish culturists in recent years have demonstrated that common household hydrogen peroxide can be used safely to provide oxygen for small fish

Are there any other additives? Several years ago I fought cyanobacteria in a tank with the first-aid type peroxide. I needed lots of it at the time and it might be nice to know where to get the industrial sized container as and when I need it.

According to the label no. But 'm an untrusting soul. I'll email them and ask.
