Its some type of panfish...
The finnage and colouration resembles a female bluegill.

Lepomis macrochirus.
I wouldn't have known that if not for Mr. Waterpond's pic - the species name was in the .jpg url, but I sounded real smart there for a minute! Nice detective work Mr. Waterpond!

Haha, after years as a unseasoned fisherman, i know my crappy fish. You know.. the ones you think are gigantic bass, but when you pull them up they are just tiuny little nothing fish.
They are cute though, make good pets if given about a 40gallon+ all to themselves. They get fairly large, and are uber agressve.

i actually caught these by hand! it was a pretty funny moment to remember. gonna return them to the lake soon, it'd be better for them too.
p.s. heard they make a good meal when camping

Haha, they are really boney fish. Not the best eating
I am glad you will release them. They really dont deserve to be kept in tanks.

there's a guy back here that only keeps north american fish and some are as colorful as any cichlid.

That would be interesting to do, if I had the tanks for it.

At the last CAOAC convention there was a speaker about native fish. Defintely some beauties out there.
I was offered some rainbow darters, but i turned them down because i didnt want to have to dedicate the space and cool water needed.

Stunning! I guess I think of your average fishermen's fish when I think of native fish. I quite honestly had no idea that there were such beauties in my back yard.
