Into the afterlife..... have you ever thought about what would happen to your fish?

Last year a great person, Dominick Eden, passed away from Cancer, and he left behind a fish room with well over a hundred fish and many many tanks and supplies. The East Coast Aquarium Society eventually stepped in and offered a hand to rescue those fish, and foster them until healthy, then auction them off, with proceeds going to the Eden family.

In tough times like this, it would be very hard for family members to even think twice about helping save his fish. A lot of people would probably even say just flush them. But, after seeing what happened with the fish rescue last year, I realized I would want the same kind of treatment myself !!

I mean I love my fish, and I put my heart and sole into caring for and raising and breeding my fish, and making nice homes for them etc etc.... And if I were to die for some reason, and my family took it upon themselves to FLUSH them, why, I would come back to haunt them I am sure ! That would be an insult to me, and to what I loved !!

So I decided to make it known to my family how much my fish mean to me... and how they must take care of these things if I happen to leave this world someday. I told my partner that he can keep one tank if he really wants to (he is not into fish )......but that I would want the rest of them to be 'rescued' by my local aquarium club and then auctioned off.... and the money can then pay for the rescue and any leftovers can go back to my hubby and family....

I want to know my fish are taken care of if something suddenly happened to me... I did not put years and years into this hobby, and have these fish I love, who count on me for their existence, to be flushed away or left to die in unkept tanks... that would be horrible to think !! And I dont want to have to worry about that possibility... so now I have it covered, and I sleep better at night! :twitcy:

So.... do you have someone to take care of your fish if something were to happen to you? I mean one tank... not so bad, but I know the majority of us here have MTS !! And too many fish to count ! :;):

Jeez, I'd never really thought about it!

I think I'll give my loved ones the contacts for the local fish nuts, and everyone can fight over my aquatic estate. An auction would be ideal...
Someone would probably need to step up as an organizer though. I can understand family members not being up to it.
It would be horrible for someone to flush a person's fish. Would you shoot someone's dog just because their owner died?

I highly doubt that anyone who cared about me would flush my fish, even if they hated them. Most people have the common sense to at least bag them and take them to the local fish store if they can't manage them. If they couldn't cope, clubs everywhere rally in these situations and I'm sure any local club would be there if we needed them.

Certainly arrangements are considerate of the person who happens to die. I told my family years ago to just call Mr. Mykiss and he'd have it all sold in a day. I'm willing to bet that every penny would land in my Son's hand and he wouldn't keep a dime even if it cost him money to pull it off. I'm sure I can say the same of every friend I have.

Which reminds me, I'm a very lucky girl to have such good fish friends. What a positive thought to start a day with.::D:

I gave this some thought and last night typed in the words Fish Rescue in Ontario using google. Immediately several clubs popped up. A good idea would be to do a similar search in the province that you live in and contact those individuals. I know my goldies would be taken in by my good friend and she's a fantastic fish keeper. I have 4 of her ranchu because she's been renovating a 150 year old house, while working full time, going to school and raising her family.

Wills, many don't have one and those that do, they're probably outdated. I thought about what would happen to my fish, nothing written down but it's something that I should do...or at least make it well known to the rest of the family.

Thanks for the heads up!

It would probably be a bigger concern for the harder to place fish, like huge ones or seriously aggressive ones... or both.

All livebearer owners should name me as a beneficiary. Then I can be a fish heiress.

 Talk about lightning the mood! LOL!

Me, I have no one close to me who is into fish like I am .... just a bunch of great internet friends around 3 hours away, who I am sure would help if the need arose :;):

And I do know people, even close relatives, who would and HAVE flushed fish (theirs not mine)..... even AFTER I said I wanted them.....ggrrrrr...... so I'm betting they would do the same with mine if given the chance.....:chatterbox:

The use of your local aquarium society or your LFS would be the bes thing at that time, and not only then but at times of serious illness. How many of us live alone, or with sopouses that do not know how to maintain our tanks and would need that sort of assistance. I have always maintained a will, a power of attorney for both medical and financial decisions, I never thought to put instruction in there about my tanks though. Guess I will be visiting the lawyers over the next while.
