Common name: False Clownfish
Scientific name: Amphiprion ocellaris
Family: Pomacentridae
Origin: East Indian Ocean & Western Pacific Ocean, Indo Pacific and North to Japan.
Adult size: 3.5 inches
Tank Specs
Minimum Tank Size: 10g for a pair, but larger tank recommended
Water Parameters (PH/SG): pH- 8.2-8.3, SG 1.023-1.025
Temperature: 78-80
Special Requirements: None really, tough little guys
Suitable Tankmates: Aggressive or predatory species should not be kept with them. Also, do NOT mix in other species of clownfish as they most likely will not get along unless it is a huge tank.
Minimum Group Size: Best kept in pairs, or one per tank. Only try to keep more than a pair in larger tanks, as the bonded pair may attack other single clowns. Obtaining a group of young clowns may work, as they will form a hierarchy as they mature....and only one clown, the largest, will become a female. Once a clown turns female, it cannot turn back to a male. If she dies, the next largest dominate male will turn female. If obtained as adults the dominate females will fight for territory.
Diet: Omnivores... will eat just about anything. Good frozen foods, or live foods, should be offered now and then.
Sexing: Once mature, the females are larger than the males.
Breeding and Reproduction: Have been bred in captivity, lays eggs on a hard surface, and the eggs are tended to by the pair. Larvae hatch out in 8 days and require special planktonic food. Should be only attempted by the experts.
Notes: Clowns do NOT require an anemone to be happy, but they will host in Bubble-tipped, Magnificent, Saddle Carpet, Giant Carpet Sea, and Merten's sea anemones. But has also been seen to host in weird things like mats of hair algae and feather dusters.
