Female Yellow Halfmoon Betta

Common name: Siamese Fighting fish
Scientific name: Betta splendens
Family: Belontiidae
Origin: Thailand, Cambodia
Adult size: 3 inches
Tank Specs
Minimum Tank Size: 2gallons, 5 gallon min. preferred though

Water Parameters (PH/GH/KH): 6.5-7.8, adjusts well to most parameters

Temperature: 75-85

Special Requirements: fancier varieties seen to do better with addition of salt to help ward off fin problems.
Suitable Tankmates: Peaceful tankmates only, and not ones that can fit into the bettas mouth. Avoid fin nippers that will pick on the bettas fins.

Minimum Group Size: one single male (do not keep males with other males, or with females unless just to breed.) Multiple females can be kept together, and will form a hierarchy.
Diet: Carnivore. Do NOT overfeed, as constipation is common. Feed a thawed frozen pea, with shell removed occasionally to help with consitpation.

Sexing: Males have longer flowing fins, females short fins, with a egg spot on vent.

Breeding and Reproduction: Males build a bubble nest, and wraps around the female during spawning. When eggs released the male catches them and deposits them into his bubble nest, where he cares for them until they become free swimming. Fry require microscopic live foods, such as infusoria.

Notes: They are a labyrinth fish, meaning they have a special breathing organ so they can breath air from the surface. So even though they have gills, they must also have access to the surface for air. They also like a planted tank.
