Montezuma Swordtail

Common name: Montezuma Swordtail
Scientific name: Xiphophorus montezumae
Family: Poeciliidae
Origin: Mexico
Adult size: Males can 5+ inches (including tail)
Tank Specs

Minimum Tank Size: 10+ per pair or trio
Water Parameters (PH/GH/KH): pH 7.0 – 8.0 dH 10-20
Temperature: Tropical fish, temperature 20-26°C / 68-79°F
Special Requirements: Freshwater fishSuitable Tankmates: Other peaceful community fish

Minimum Group Size: No minimum but to keep females from being stressed its best to keep them in trio's. Two females per every male.

Diet: Omnivorous, will readily accept flake food, pellets, spirulina, algae wafers, cooked zuchinni, frozen and live foods.

Sexing: Coloring is very simular, as is body size not including the tail. Males will have a long sword and possess a gonopodium. Females will possess a gravid spot.

Breeding and Reproduction: Monty's are livebearers. As with any livebearer female it will give birth to fully developed fry, provide plants & plenty of hiding places for fry to hide. Females can be isolated before they give birth to increase the survival rate among the fry. Breeding traps can be used but tend to stress out the females a bit.

Breeding: A single mating can produce several batches of fry. Keep a trio when possible of two females per male, this will put less stress on the females from being constantly harassed.

Notes: These are absolute stunning fish, the largest of all the swords. The link I provided will be switched out in a few hours with photo's of my own Monty's, they are still acclimating to their tank and a little stressed out. Plus my fish are a bit nicer in colour. :)
