Common name: Firefish , Fire Goby
Scientific name: Nemateleotris magnifica
Family: Gobiidae
Origin: Indo-Pacific Ocean
Adult size: 3 inches
Tank Specs
Minimum Tank Size: 5g is possible with proper maintenance, but larger tanks mostly preferred
Water Parameters (PH/SG): 8.1-8.4 pH ; 1.020-1.025 SG
Temperature: 72-78
Special Requirements: requires a tightly covered tank as is known to go carpet surfing when startled
Suitable Tankmates: Peaceful tank mates only. Will also not get along with others of the same or very similar species, unless kept in groups of 5 or more, which then require a lot more tank space... 20g each.
Minimum Group Size: One, or a mated pair, or a group of 5+ in a larger tank
Diet: Carnivore. Will accept processed foods, BBS, mysis shrimp, finely chopped frozen foods, alage and zooplankton found growing in the tank.
Sexing: Hard to tell apart, length of dorsals may differ.
Breeding and Reproduction: unknown
Notes: Likes to have its own hiding place, a bolt hole, where it will stay and sleep a lot if in a busy tank. Will venture out more if not a lot of other fish around. If scared, it will dart into this hole with lightning speed. If the tank has a sandy bottom, it also likes to bury itself in the sand. Normal position when out in the tank, is that is swims with head slightly up, and tail down, with it's dorsal fin flicking. Very interesting fish to watch.
A very colorful addition to any peaceful SW aquarium !!
