Common name: Lawnmower Blenny, Jeweled Blenny
Scientific name: Salarias fasciatus
Family: Blenniidae
Origin: Indo-Pacific Ocean
Adult size: 5 inches
Tank Specs
Minimum Tank Size: 15g with extreme care, 20g better
Water Parameters (PH/SG): 8.1-8.4 pH; 1.020-1.025 SG
Temperature: 72-78
Special Requirements: Needs a well established tank so algae to feed on is plentiful.
Suitable Tankmates: Other peaceful tankmates
Minimum Group Size: One... or a pair. May fight with other similarly shaped fish.
Diet: Vegetarian. Some think they eat hair algae, but most lawnmower blennies will not eat hair algae, but prefer film type algaes. Mouth is designed to scrape algae off of surfaces. They like to graze throughout the day, and can be offered vegetable based foods, and dried sea weeds etc... If offered sheets of algae, like Nori, attach to a flat surface so it is flat against the surface and the blenny can scrape at it with its mouth. It tends to not feed from algae sheets that are floating loosely on a algae clip.
Sexing: unknown
Breeding and Reproduction: egg layer
Notes: May be drab in color, but adds tonnes of personality to any reef tank. Is safe around most corals as well, may nip at small-polyped stony coral and clam mantles.
