Synthesizer/mixer - any advice?

I've decided that my young piano man would love a sythesizer/mixer for Christmas. He is entirely self-taught on the piano, and since he's approaching the teenage years, a more cool version should appeal.

However, I haven't a clue what to look for these days. Any suggestions? I mean, if you were a preteen who loves piano and has the 'chick thrilling' rock band visions in mind, what would you want?
