"Coats for kids" is a nationwide program that is underway in many areas of the country right now.

I'm having trouble providing links, so please search for your local info.

At we are saving milk bags for one of the schools. Someone is using them to make blankets for the homeless.

That's very interesting! I googled but I can't find a thing about it. There are lots of links on how to knit, crochet, weave, etc with plastic bags, but none look functional for blankets. Do you know how she does it?

I am not sure how she does it. Another school is doing it for someone to make mats. Maybe that is actually what they meant when they said blankets. I was not sure how good they would be as a blanket, but as a sleeping mat they would be good to keep the dampness out and a bit of a cushion. I have seen purses made out of grocery bags.
I found a link to the mats.

I usually knit a set of scarves & mitts for each of my grandchildren (3) to place on the tree of warmth at their schools. Each school gives them to some needy group. So I had better get my knitting needles out and get busy. I am late this year. Thanks for the reminder.

Such awesome people, thanks for the link and inspiration!

Gramma, you should knit fishy stuff for the auction too, but not until those appreciative little hands are tucked into their warm mitts of course. I like creating pictures on graph paper for existing patterns. You could try something like that, I bet they'd be beautiful. Nobody has time to knit anymore so it would be a nice little side income. I know I'd gladly purchase! Decor would be great - it's tough to find any that isn't tacky or for children.

I hope you will post pictures of the sets, I'd love to see them.

 We were able to drop off a few coats & other Winter items last weekend, including my ever-improving touques (they couldn't have been worse so they had to be better). My teenager said no tassles or pom poms are fashionable so I went with a basic pattern that's all the rage. I got a few Alligator scarves done, I'm pretty good at those. Next I'll try mittens... good thing fingerless is in style.

For Heaven's sake don't leave these people to rely on my knitting skills! Help if you can - kids should enjoy snow! :Holiday-9:

Yes, I know, too early! But I found a wonderful link to share on Facebook and wanted to add it here so I don't forget.

The Snuggles Project provides measurements & patterns for blankets that you can sew/quilt, knit or crochet for local animal shelters. I love their cheery site too.

I can't wait to get started - it's a nice & easy project and would be great for 'scraps'. If you come up with any pattern variations to share, or want to show us your donations, I'd love to see them. Don't forget to pass it along to other needle enthusiasts!
