When your fish rush to the glass to great you, is it because they saw you or heard you? Most likely it is because the saw you approach as fish are primarily visual creatures. However, they do possess an inner ear and a lateralis system both of which aids in their ability to hear. Inner ear info (http://www2.biology.ualberta.ca/jackson.hp/IWR/Content/Anatomy/Inner_Ear/index.php). It makes me wonder how all the noise I make around here is perceived by my fish. (what about the vacuum? ... rather deafening even from within a tank one would think.:wideeyed:)

Also, have you ever wondered how schooling fish are able to sense movement in the school and follow it? It's their lateralis system (http://www2.biology.ualberta.ca/jackson.hp/IWR/Content/Anatomy/Lateralis/index.php). Interesting stuff.

Such complex creatures overall. Mine appear to prefer country to rock. :;):
