View Full Version : What do you call this guy???
Pamelajo

One pair of my albino bn always gives me regular bns but tonight I noticed this little guy with white on the dorsal and caudal fins. Was wondering what he would be called. Do the white tipped bns come from Albino parents?? Not the best pic, sorry. Also thinking maybe I should keep this guy and find a couple more and try breeding more like him/her. What do you thinK?

The albino gene is a mutation of the color gene in some sort.
Once in a while, an albino pair which breeds true will give off a regular colored offspring, like the one you have!
Pamelajo
Oct 19th 2007, 07:57 PM
This pair always gives off regular colour babies, never seen one albino. Mother is a sister to my pair that give off only albinos but the father was given to me by a friend and looks like albino, but I believe he is the one responsible for the regular coloured babies. Hope that make sense!
I have never seen any of the regular babies with sooo much white especially on both fins and wondered if the ones they call white tipped or silver tipped come from albino parents (both or just one). And do they have the white on both fins??

It all makes more sense now!!
Ok, seriously, I now really don't know!!
Maybe the albinos you have are from different species that can cross together...
Mother could be a cross between x and y
Father could be a cross between x and z
Offspring would most likely be all x, and once in a while a z in the group(which is like what you have), and a y once in a while, that looks almost identical to x....
It's a longshot, but it's the most logical thing I can think of!
Ancistrus sp. can quite probably all cross together to give off different offsprings!

You're right that I work odd hours. But I did get home early last night (7:45 pm). However, I woke up at shortly after 3 am. this morning because I fell asleep way too early last night. That one is what they call white tip, but the ones I've seen and have don't have as much white on the dorsal. Many only have a bit of white on the tail as well. Its a fish that could definitly be a breeder if you want to develop the strain into something superior. Hopefully he doesn't lose it as he ages. A lot of mine had their white turn yellow, which looks fine too. Its the width of the strip and matching dorsal that makes yours exceptional, regardless of what color it turns out to be.
Inbreeding may have made the wild pigment dominant in your Albinos, or made the albinoism triple recessive somehow. A dominant wild should be expressed though. It is definitly an exception to what I've seen in the hobby, but of course, most of my experience with albinos is in Livebearers.
There is more than one type of albinoism, contrary to popular belief. It can effect certain colours rather than all pigments, for example. It also doesn't necessarily result in a red eye. Maybe inbreeding resulted in one of these other types of albinoism becoming dominant. We call a creature that is totally lacking in colour a true albino, but that's more of a way to differentiate than actual fact.
Sometimes genes combine to make an exception and it would be fun to work with him. I'd cross the offspring back to the parents and cross siblings, just to see what happens.
Nice work on the test!

Thanks Mel. The white tips I have seen too do not have it on the dorsal. This pic is terrible but it looks more white than the photo. I will definitely be keeping him and hope for more like him. These are from my wierd pair remember albino father from unknown genes I got from one of the snail people in the states and the female (siblings breed only albinos) is from a lady in Burlington.

Good luck. I hope you do get more like him. It would be interesting to see how many offspring would have the same markings if you could breed two like him.

That's great! Even if they've been around before, I don't know of anyone who has worked on them as a different colour strain. No bristles or very tiny ones at that age = female. Bristles especially a larger one on the nose and perhaps a visible 'diamond' or v-shape on the top & just below the head = male. Now you have to say I'm nice because I helped :Neener: . However, I'm sure our BN-Chick Pam could verify with a pic - she's a smart one!

most males will have large bristles that form along the top of the mouth a single line up between the eyes and then 'v's out from there. Also with males the bristles will split at the top becomming a 'v' as well. Females on the other hand usually only have small bristles along the top of the mouth and will not split like the males do.
Pamelajo
Jan 5th 2008, 02:43 PM
So far all my albino females have no wiskers. The lf brown lace female that I had only had small bristles and none on top of her nose.
Melody
Jan 5th 2008, 03:25 PM
I've noticed that the females can have bristles or not too, which is a rather cool variant. My female White-tip has no bristles. The Black-eyed Gold BN (L144) females have a couple of very tiny bristles at the mouth. The female 'Starlights' had small bristles around the mouth too, as did the common BN species females that I had.
