Does anyone know what causes java ferns to look like they have rust on them??
Any help would be apreciated.

Pam i think what you have on the leaves is spores, this plant produces babies on the end of the leaves, its nothing to worry about, in fact you can leave the baby plants there until they are big enough , then you have yourself new plants, just pinch them off when you see some good roots

My java ferns never get that before they get babies on the end of the leaves. They just kindof get black at the tips, then new little leaves start to grow..
Black stuff same kindof thing, perhaps?

Yes im sure its the same stuff. some of mine get the rusty look and some get the black, either way they are all healthy,it just looks like there is a problem with the plant.
Java ferns are slow to get going when first put into the aquarium,, then before you know it (.mine took three months ) they are on their way, mine are all huge now, a really nice plant

I too get both the black and the rusty look (mostly the rusty look). What I have done when there are many little plantlets on the end of a leaf is pinched off the larger leaf with plantlets attached (if the plant is big enough so that it is not impacted) and used the bigger leaf to anchor the new plantlets elsewhere in the tank as it is sometimes hard to anchor the tiny new plantlets on their own.
