:Holiday-13: Please remember your local animal shelters over the holiday - they are often neglected in favour of human charities.

My Son's best friend came from the SPCA. She is especially treasured because he has grown up with no siblings - she's it. Ever since she chose him (and yes, it really went that way...lol) we have made the SPCA one of our Christmas charities. We take food, treats, toys, and whatever knitting I've managed to get done. Then I have to go pat each and every animal in there, usually come close to losing a hand a couple of times in the dog section and leave in tears because I want to take them all home. I realize that doesn't sound like a fun Christmas activity, but sometimes ya gotta do what ya gotta do. I've had to mail the stuff in due to a lack of transportation lately, but it doesn't cost much. We always bring/send an updated pic of our adopted pet too.

Please don't give pets as gifts unless you are the one who will be looking after it and are prepared to do so. Never adopt on a whim.

My Son has always come with me when we make our donation. When he was little, the officers working at the shelter would make a big deal out of asking him how many treats each dog and cat should get and so on. They're a great bunch, so please keep them in mind if you can help.

Some items they require:

Good quality food & treats
Cat Litter
Paper Towels
Blankets / Beds
Trash Bags
Kennels
Toys

They can always use foster homes as well.

:Teddy: The 2009 season is especially tough and people are having to surrender their pets. Sometimes it's not a matter of being able to afford a pet, circumstances change and often we have to move to find work to a place that a pet can't join us, etc.

Please help if you can and ask for help if you need it. There is no shame in loving your pet enough to ask for help, you should be proud of your dedication to obtaining what they need.

My able feline assistant,Maddie has organised her own Towells(her and my last name) for towels drive last spring. With a little help from her Mom, she got quite the haul of old Towels(picked up by an old Towell) . She feels quite strongly about helping cats less fortunate than herself. As a "previously enjoyed" cat, she knows how they feel. Quite the cat, that "Mad". Amazing how many old towels she got when she sent out an e-mail and offered to pick up.

That was a cool idea. Glad to hear it was a big success.

This is a wonderful idea! I can get rid of my old ratty towels that I refuse to throw away if there's five threads left, and then ask for new towels for Christmas! Not to mention sparing those poor animals a night on my knitting... :twitcy: .

FYI, Calgary's SPCA is waiving the adoption fee for cats for the remainder of June. They are also in need of any cat supplies so Maddie and I will doing another towel drive. If you"ve been looking to adopt an "able feline assistant", now's the time!!!

If you're planning on attending the Calgary meeting and want to bring pet supplies(towels, food, toys, etc), I will be there. Am planning on making a trip to SPCA later in the week to drop off the goodies for our furred friends...
