I receved my Meat Wafers from Ken's fish the other day. Still waiting on another box from him that I ordered before this one, but that's niether here nor there.

If you've followed along with my disillusioned reports on heat processed commercial foods, you'll know that I've decided to move away from them completely. I will still use Omega One for the vitamin supplement and otherwise it will be the low-heat processed Dainichi.

One of the better convenience food options is freeze-dried food. These are made like the 100% pure Spirulina Tablets (http://www.canadianaquariumconnection.com/forum/showthread.php?t=482) that I got awhile ago - formed into tablets with gelatin and extreme pressure.

From Ken's site:

This is a true meat wafer that is packed with all types of freeze dried products and then put under extreme pressure. Excellent for your bottom feeding meat eating fish. Fast sinking for even the most finiky feeders.

Main Ingredients: Earthworms, Bloodworms, Shrimp, Mysis, Krill, Tubifex Worms, Gelatin, Vitamin and Minerals added.

Approximate Analysis: Min. Protein 57.0%, Min. Crude Fat 8.0%, Max Crude Fiber 1.0%, Max Moisture 6.0%, Max Ash 10.0%

I've fed them twice now and then got busy with other things and didn't take pic's. I'll work on that tomorrow. The fish loved them but I'd be surprised if they didn't - freeze-dried food always goes over well. The snails & shrimp dug right in too.

They could be constipating, especially for certain fish, so I'll be feeding them sparingly. Tonight I fed them with the Spirulina Tablets and the fish just moved back & forth between the two so all is well. Spriulina is a good source of vegie protein so it is a very high protein combo. I am trying to bring a couple of eggers into spawning condition, so I'll feed them more often in those tanks just to see how well it works for that purpose. Should work great with 57% protein.

As expected, they did cloud the water a bit in the smaller tanks, so I'll have to use smaller pieces in those.

With 6 different freeze-dried foods they rate high for convenience and just as high for yummyness  . Time will tell on the conditioning, digestibility & so on.

Thanks for the info. Look forward to forward to how they do on digestabiltiy as I always try to follow up with peas the next feeding if there is any concern about something being constipating.

Sorry Chris! OK, first installment - tank one going at them. I just fed pieces to this tank as there's not a lot of fish in there. I'll post pic's of the other tanks as I get them done. I added a pic of the wafers to the initial post.

Thanks! They're a bunch of Darrell's fish that I ordered in, so I can't take the credit. They've been awesome, growing and healthy. They're still young but the male Hifins are getting their swords in now and the finnage is lengthening. I still can't believe the female Hifins - never saw a dorsal like that on females before. That red one looks like she'll make males jealous of her dorsal by the time she's mature. The Koi I got from him are the most healthy that I've ever received too - the males are strong and enthusiastic breeders. I had the damnedest time with males before, they were always weak even when they weren't sick.

Darrell has his colony of Sailfin Swordtails now, brought in from several sources. I was on his waiting list before he had even received the first shipment....lol...I can't wait to see what he does with them. Very talented and knowledgable breeder. :notworthy:

I don't think I'll be helping you to control that anytime soon...lol. I couldn't recommend Darrell more highly. Along with the talent, knowledge, experience and respect of his fellow gurus, he's also wonderful to deal with and a fantastic person, not to mention a devoted family man. Oh and a published author too. This hobby attracts some pretty amazing people.

So let me know when you're ready for his stock list and I'll give him your e-mail addie...lol.

Yep not helping...Maybe if I forced myself to buy only males? Or duds & females. Then I could have a pair of everything. RIGHT? :nah: (oh just lie to me and say yes!) I'd love to see his stock list if only to drool over it.

You can have anything your little heart desires.... with the exception of virgin females but he might sell you juvies or something. ::D:

Tank 2 - Some wild-types & growing fry in this one. Xiphophorus, Limia, Goodeids and BN's have all given them a thumb's up.

The funny thing about this tank is they are somewhat aggressive eaters, so they end up chasing each other while the Plecos get most of the food.

The bad part about any wafer is the babies often get shut out. They surprise me with their bravery and occasionally get a nibble in, but not enough for my liking. I wait until the adults are distracted with getting their turn at the wafer and then sneak some fry food over the plants. For this meal it was Golden pearls for the L. perugiae & X. captivus fry, but they hadn't discovered it yet. I feed a similar meal as the adults are getting so they're on track for the next one, like the high 'meat' protein for this one.

This is slow going...lol...Tank 3 has the tablet stuck in the corner, but here they are fighting over it:

And this one is for Pam, since the light hit our mauve Molly right. Its usually not as intense, but its a definite mauve sheen:

I'm thinkin' we don't need anymore tanks to conclude that they're a hit. This last one got it wedged under an ornament which was funny to watch, so I'll throw that in.

Even one of Pam's baby BN's tried to brave through the adults for a piece.

I haven't seen any digestive problems - they become poo factories right after eating like usual and the feeding that follows results in the same thing. I'll continue to get these!

Thanks for all the pictures!!!! What is that brown fish in tank 3? In the big picture. It sort of looks like a Molly but it is the wrong colour
