I receved my Meat Wafers from Ken's fish the other day. Still waiting on another box from him that I ordered before this one, but that's niether here nor there.
If you've followed along with my disillusioned reports on heat processed commercial foods, you'll know that I've decided to move away from them completely. I will still use Omega One for the vitamin supplement and otherwise it will be the low-heat processed Dainichi.
One of the better convenience food options is freeze-dried food. These are made like the 100% pure Spirulina Tablets (http://www.canadianaquariumconnection.com/forum/showthread.php?t=482) that I got awhile ago - formed into tablets with gelatin and extreme pressure.
From Ken's site:
This is a true meat wafer that is packed with all types of freeze dried products and then put under extreme pressure. Excellent for your bottom feeding meat eating fish. Fast sinking for even the most finiky feeders.
Main Ingredients: Earthworms, Bloodworms, Shrimp, Mysis, Krill, Tubifex Worms, Gelatin, Vitamin and Minerals added.
Approximate Analysis: Min. Protein 57.0%, Min. Crude Fat 8.0%, Max Crude Fiber 1.0%, Max Moisture 6.0%, Max Ash 10.0%
I've fed them twice now and then got busy with other things and didn't take pic's. I'll work on that tomorrow. The fish loved them but I'd be surprised if they didn't - freeze-dried food always goes over well. The snails & shrimp dug right in too.
They could be constipating, especially for certain fish, so I'll be feeding them sparingly. Tonight I fed them with the Spirulina Tablets and the fish just moved back & forth between the two so all is well. Spriulina is a good source of vegie protein so it is a very high protein combo. I am trying to bring a couple of eggers into spawning condition, so I'll feed them more often in those tanks just to see how well it works for that purpose. Should work great with 57% protein.
As expected, they did cloud the water a bit in the smaller tanks, so I'll have to use smaller pieces in those.
With 6 different freeze-dried foods they rate high for convenience and just as high for yummyness  . Time will tell on the conditioning, digestibility & so on.
