The narrow grows thick/dense, even for me. Very nice plant, although Lace is still my fave. ::D:

I should have asked you about the narrow fern when I saw you last week!!! You don't sell plants right? Do you know who has that here maybe? I really like it and the fern lace too. I am not bringing my brother to pick it up though because he's still smiling from seeing you last time and it is embarassing. he doesn't mind driving me all of a sudden now  . But I guess you won't be there like usual anyway. It was great that we caught you once anyway and maybe I will see you at a club meeting or pauls or something.::D:

No, I don't sell plants, I kill plants, big difference  . I got some Narrow from member 'Amber...' (Marge) and some from 'HP1...' (Ed). I'm going to ban numbers in usernames because I can never remember them...lol. Anyways, I have already been charmed out of my extra Narrow but when when I have some again I can let you know.

LOL You nut! That'll teach me to be late. I almost jumped out of my skin when you two came around the corner and he said "If that's an applesnail, I want one too." Very nice of him to charm the old chick, but I'm sure I have almost a decade on him so I wouldn't worry about it Chris. :twitcy: It was nice meeting you after my heart slowed down anyway...lol.

Does Harold at Menagerie every get any of these interesting java ferns in? The only ones I've seen locally are the normal and Windlov types, but it's been a while since I looked around.

Wow this thread sure got off topic.

 Oh sorry about that but it was sort of on topic!!!:Embarassing: I think everyone goes off topic sometimes here and it makes it fun. Melody if you could let me know I would be grateful and if anyone else has some please tell me thank you.:notworthy:

No worries. A little :offtopic: detour is fine. Around here, we don't look at it so much as off-topic as a thread evolving. We're here to share info and enjoy ourselves. In this case, the thread has now evolved to include 'where to find' the various species of java fern.

Speaking of which, are all varieties readily available here in Canada or are some more difficult to find?

No worries here either I was just saying...... Easy fellas !!! LOL.

Regular Java Fern and Windelov (Lace)
Menagerie (and most of the other stores around) carry these. For Menagerie,
best to call them for a stock check on the other varieties, especially if the store
is out of your way.

'Phillipine' - is the next most common. Hard to say who has it when. I had this one as well, like it better then the first 2. Very nice plant. Local aquarists have these 3 species fairly common.

I have a couple 'Lace' to grow up still would grow faster if I tied to something.

Narrow-Leaf and Needle-Leaf - not the easiest to find around here. From what I have seen either could become my fave java fern. Luckily a generous friend is sending me some in spring. Most likely it will go into my snail tank :)

BA had the 'Red'. As for the other recently found or developed cultivar species not yet easy to find in Ontario at least. You can probably find some on Aquabid. However Canada Customs is stopping more stuff these days (I had Moss from Singapore get stopped in Vancouver, then held for 2 months, so I received dead brown fluff on a screen), and some of the cultivars are 'protected' by Tropica.

At least with easy plants such as these there are now more varieties to choose from :)

Good to know. And maybe some of our 'green-thumbed' members who have copious amounts might put some up for sale on the auction... ya never know.

Nope, no topic concern around here. I think he's just grumpy from all of the snow, Chris. :Holiday-1: I'll let you know if I see any Narrow!

<Throws a snowball @ Mr. Dafishman> I put a lot of work into gathering up these smilies - use them so you don't scare people next time. :BOLTS::laugh:

   Melody I think you and dafishman like to bug each other and one of you will end up in a snowdrift!!! My money is on dafishman going in head first if he teases melody anymore:SantaStuck:  . Does anyone have needle fern? That looks like narrow except more narrow :twitcy: .

Yes I have to admit I'm not a winter person anymore LOL. I like being warm and cozy.
I'm so glad I got the tank going again to see something tropical :)

"Throws a snowball @ Mr. Dafishman" - hey !! :swoon:
Ok I guess that is fair since I clubbed you in that other thread :Embarassing:

Chrissy I could not be so mean as to toss a lady into the snow !

Chrissy I could not be so mean as to toss a lady into the snow !

You aren't the first person to fantasize about throwing me into a snow drift and quite possibly in the way of an oncoming plow...lol...but I've yet to have someone try it so I'm not too worried about a bratt in Ontario. :Neener:

Now about this Needle-Leaf Java Fern, I don't recall anyone having it around here but ya never know.

Sharing / trading is good !
Much better getting plants this way and sure beats paying store price.
I had 11 species of crypts, 6 mosses and 3 types java fern my last round in the hobby.
Most thru trades ! Collectoritis is a bad thing though did not have room for them all.
Keeping things simpler this time around (at least I tell myself that NOW ! )

I hope to have extra crypts by spring and maybe I can get this java Lace to grow enough to split off a few plants :) Hoping these Italian vals will take off too.

Sorry Chris. It goes to show I didn't read your post carefully in my rush to head off to work. I read 'mel' as 'me'... meaning you. :twitcy:
