Vancouver Aquatic Hobbyist Society
:orcawhale:
The VAHC is dedicated to encouraging the aquarium hobby in our local area. We meet monthly to discuss aquarium related topics and share our collective experiences. Meetings include expert speakers and mini-auctions. You do not have to be a member to attend meetings. We hold a big members-only Spring auction and a Fall auction which is open to the public.

Membership Fees: $20 / Year - You will receive a membership card that is honored by many stores in the Lower Mainland for discounts on livestock and merchandise. You will also receive the monthly club newsletter.

:idea:WRITE TO WIN! :pompom:

The Vancouver Aquatic Hobbyist Club has an awesome 'Write to Win' (http://www.fishopolis.com/vahc/newsletter_write.cfm) contest every year. Designed to encourage members to write articles for the club newsletter, The Fishmonger, this contest has had fantastic prizes in the past, including tanks and deluxe lighting.

You do NOT have to be an expert - sharing your personal experiences is valuable and encouraged. There are guidelines at the above link and you can also read past issues of The Fishmonger (http://www.fishopolis.com/vahc/newsletter_archive.cfm) for examples.

Have fun and good luck!

The next VAHC meeting is on December the 6th (first Wednesday of December). There's the Chrsitmas exchange this year so VAHC club members, don't forget to bring a wrapped gift! There's also some give-aways to VAHC members as we normally do for December! See you all there!

All submitted articles from VAHC club members to the VAHC newsletter will be eligable to win a year subscription to the Tropic Fish Hobbyist magazine. I just posted the meeting on the calendar (http://www.canadianaquariumconnection.com/forum/calendar.php?s=&c=1&week=&month=12&year=2006) and was wondering if there is a certain value limit for the gift people are supposed to bring?

At the next VAHC meeting (which is free for all!), Jen Reynolds from the Vancouver aquarium will be talking about the unusual aquarium inhabitants on display in the Aquaquest gallery and some of the larger fishes that most hobbyists aren't able to, or shouldn't keep. See you all there!

I have a question/suggestion - why doesn't the VAHC have a BAP (Breeders Award Program)?

We don't have enough volunteers to help out so it limits what we can do. Sorry

Hmmm.... what does it take? Maybe we could recruit some people for you :D . I'm sure its a big undertaking, but it certainly encourages breeding. People can earn points for other things too, like submitting articles/photos, etc.

There's the write to win contest where club members submit an article and get chances to win cool prizes, otherwise, I think it would take at least 2 new people to keep track of things and see all the fishes from breeders.

I forgot about the fish-viewing, I see your point for sure. It would be nice though - maybe when we're bigger and have more members willing to volunteer. I think I would like a 'Master Livebearer Breeder' title ;) .
