January is usually pretty quiet. The end of February and into March & April we see a lot of Spring auctions. You live in the big Province for shows actually, I never see them out here other than the little auction jar shows & whatnot. Hopefully having the convention out here will inspire more of that.

Last I read of CAOAC is that they are getting a push going to get more of the non-Ontarian clubs to join so that it becomes a trely Canadian association. And thus helps the hobby from across Canada

'Out here' as in 'out West'. As for a society, start one. That's how they all start - one person taking the initiative and rounding people up.

Might just as well add in Guppies and call it a-typical  . That assumption is only based on the speakers though, maybe it will shape into something different entirely. I suppose they have to go with local interest to a certain point, and I've never seen a more loyal Cichlid following than I've seen in Alberta.
We could show up there with Shrimp, Snails & Livebearers and start a new trend. Maybe some nice Plecos, Tetras or Longfin Whiteclouds, hmm? It would be good for them.

:idea:I have an idea. Melody, you could volunteer as a guest speaker on snails &/or livebearers in exchange for hotel accommodation while you attend the event.

I did a look at the CAOAC speakers speakers list that they maintain for clubs to reference... Cichlids Cichlids Cichlids...
What is with these people and their cichlids? There are so many other species of fish out there that are just as beautiful AND you can keep other species of fish in the tanks at the same time.... OH WHAT A NOVEL CONCEPT...
Seriously I would like them to look at expanding their awards to recognise that variety of species that are out there as well as add a few new ones... Maybe an award named after Barb Newell for Discus. (One of the best Discus people in N.A. who passed away this month). I may just go out there... besides it is may... Edmonton can't be THAT cold.... right?

LOL Well someone will dig you out of the snowdrift I'm sure. I stayed there for 10 months and it wasn't so bad... but then again, I was living in Inuvik at the time so pretty much anything was toasty.:Holiday-1:
Cichlids are relatively easy to keep alive, maybe that's part of the appeal. Their water supply is also well suited for many Cichlids, but so is most of Ontario's. People get interested in what others are interested in quite easily as a rule, so I guess they keep each other pumped up about it.
I don't know if they used it or not, but an idea circulated for the ALA 2007 convention logo, was a Halfbeak eating a Cichlid....lol. I'm getting a t-shirt from it in Bill's next box, so I'll let you know.

I think I know the guy you speak of - a legend in his own time. I taught him everything he knows.

A legend in his own time or a legend in his own mind ?

LOL We can both be guilty of that one, since try as I may to remember, I can still count the things I've taught you on one hand which doesn't exactly add up to 'everything'. But if we don't brag ourselves up, who will?

Maybe an award named after Barb Newell for Discus. (One of the best Discus people in N.A. who passed away this month). Was she the lady that had Canadian Discus site?

Yes, the site is here: http://www.canadadiscus.com/
I understand her stock was sold through a local (Burlington) shop recently.

yes... all her stock went to a Burlington store that she was associated with and sold off on a first come first served basis. Some people got some very good deals on some rare Discus. Barb was well known across North America for the quality of her stock especially her Ocean Greens.

Most of her stock went to Alternative Aquariums in Burlington. http://www.alternativeaquariums.com/

Whilst doing the calendar I noticed that the Hamilton & District Aquarium Society (http://www.hdas.ca/showauction.html) does a fine job at listing auctions in Ontario and even Winnipeg. I thought it might be handy to post the link. All auctions are listed on our calendar as well.

I'm also planning on heading to an auction just outside of Buffalo (Boston, NY) & thought I'd mention it, it is about a 2.5 hour drive but I figure it'd be a good opportunity to visit a few friends who aren't far and to pick up some new bloodlines. :)
