what is the best kind of catfish for this tank, i need an algae eater (pleco) and something to clean up excess food, it has to be able to stay in this tank for at least 6 months, but preferably permanently, and yes, i mean 32" x 7", i custom built it .

hehe, this is the tank with the flowerhorn and stuff in it, so no ottos, he will eat them, the shrimp are 100% no, i had 3 amano, well, just imagine how that went over with this flowerhorn, little do i need to say they were gone the next day lol, and i was trying to avoid cory cats, the gravel is pretty sharp and in my experience, i already have to many in a different tank, the pics are in the cichlid part of this forum, but ill post them here to

I think the only Pleco that would be fine with a Flowerhorn would be one that is at least as big as its going to be, which you don't have room for. You're also limited to algae-eating Plecos, the best of which would be the BN Pleco's. The larger varieties might be fine but again, they'd need more room.

I think you're going to have to avoid algae or hand-remove it for this tank until you move the Flowerhorn to bigger digs.

k, when this flowerhorn gets 3-4 inches, hes coming out of there and goin in my 90, so aggression isnt really goin to be a problem, and what about something to clean excess food, ive been power feeding this flowerhorn trying to get him to grow faster to put in my big tank. whoops, i didnt list the tank inhabitants did i? ok

flowerhorn (coming out ASAP)
salvini (coming out ASAP)
Thorichthys Pasionis (2, hoping for male and female, and goin to a different tank asap)
Apistgramma Borllii (i only have one male, so im deciding whether to keep him in there, or put him in a different tank,

I'm outa my league for tankmates on those species so I'll leave it to the others. There are some more aggressive loaches that could do clean-up duty I would think, and you should be able to keep those that are smaller. However, I don't know how compatible each would be with those particular species. I think you'll have to do some indepth research there.

For that size tank I'd say the Pleco would have to stay under 5" and preferrably 4", as should the other fish due to the narrow width. Plecos are very messy, especially the algae-loving varieties, so they need several times their size in tank space at the bio-level. Ross might have some suggestions - BN's are the only group I know well.

ok, thanx, dirty is no problem, i have a 50% per week W/C schedule, sometimes twice a week, which i would think is well enough, how good are clown plecos for algae eating? i need something to eat algae, cuz my flowerhorn ate my chinese algae eater... to be honest, my flowerhorn isnt aggressive, just very hungry, he doesnt harm anyone he cant, well, eat.

I don't know if this is typical behavior but my clown pleco almost never ventures much beyond his cave and although I will see my BN plecos scrubbing the glass or snails, I've never seen him do it. Either he's not a big algae eater or maybe he's just too content with what I feed him to bother.:Dunno:

Hey nice tank.

Couple of question on it, from the pictures looks like just glass. What did you glue it together with? Reason I ask is not sure about doing that with just silcone. I would like to make one to fit an empty spot, so reason I am asking.

Oh, and nice fish too..

It's smaller than you're thinking - 32 inches x 7 inches, so a redtail would be too large.

How about a raphael cat or other armoured species?

i saw a pic of a large tank in the thread, thought that said 7 feet :P

If you can get your Raphael catfish out of hiding. I have 3 in a 125g. I see them, oh, once a week. If i'm real lucky. Even then it would only be one.
