Some members may or may not have noticed that we are using a different method than a lot of older forums used for marking forums and threads as 'Read'. Please refer to the New Post Icons (http://www.canadianaquariumconnection.com/forum/showthread.php?t=303) thread for additional details.

Our system currently keeps track (in the database) of which forums contain threads you have not yet read. The old style of tracking this (other forum software and older versions of our vBulletin software) is done by using cookies. Currently (as you may or may not have noticed) all cookies are cleared when you log off.

We do have a choice. We can use either system. The only down-side of the older (more familiar) system that I can see is that if you 'pop in' to the site to check or answer an PM (or you have only viewed a couple of posts, leaving the rest to 'later'), when you leave all Forums will be marked as 'Read' . This means when you next log in everything left unread when you last logged off will be considered 'Read' and will not show as 'New Posts'.

And so, remember, this forum is about meeting the needs of 'you the members' and so we would like to hear from you as to which method you would prefer us to use for marking 'Forums Read'. Please take time to vote on this and give us feedback.

Also, please do not hesitate to ask questions. They will help clarify things for yourself and other members.

Maybe a more clear definition of the function would help? For example, with one method the objective is to only alert you to new messages since you're last visit. The other method (used currently) alerts you to unread messages no matter how many times you've been here.

I think that's right anyway...lol....we're terming everything as 'unread' etc, so it sounds a bit confusing.

Why couldn't I have just said that? Sometimes the techie in me :GEEK: has a hard time getting to the point and leaving all that techie mumbo-jumbo behind. Anyways folks., we'd like to hear from you about: 'what Melody said'

I voted for the current method. Even though I'm not used to it, your explanation does make sense. I will just get used to clicking the Mark Forums Read quick link after every visit.

Current method via the DB is preferable than cookie tracking...
I use 3 machines throughout my day so consistent tracking is preferable in the account profile. Besides all cookies are set for deletion on my end with a browser close.
