I bought a cheapo hatchery last night & set it up. Today i got a 10gal with the thought of raising them to adulthood for the purpose of feeding to my tropicals. After googling about raising them to adulthood it sounded like quite an involved process. I'm willing to give it a shot, but is this even a worthwhile pursuit?

If not, i'm thinking of setting the 10gal as a breeding tank for my sword. (my female dwarf gourami & the sword have been acting oddly toward each other lately.):wideeyed:

Personally, I don't think it's worth the trouble to culture the shrimp to adults. It might be interesting to give it a try, though.

Most of my fish are pretty small, but even my Pelvichromis taeniatus cichlids will chase and eat the baby brine shrimp.

People sometimes use ghost shrimp for adult feeders.

For all the fuss, it would probably be just as easy to buy the Ghost feeders. I've never bought or fed them them that I recall, but they're very inexpensive.

Gammarus are a freshwater shrimp-like amphipod so they'd be less trouble than Brine. Member 'Mykiss' has cultures of Gammarus.

The added advantage of going with something freshwater would be having them stay alive in the fish tank until they're eaten.

Shrimp isn't terribly nutritious so if you do use them as feeders, I'd suggest gutloading them first. You can buy frozen Shrimp that is already fortified. My fave is Emerald Entre', fortified with Spirulina.

If you do give it a whirl, I'd love to hear how it goes.
