Not the same brand but should be close enough: http://www.bigalsonline.ca/StoreCatalog/ctl3664/cp17368/si1316425/cl1/carib_sea_black_tahitian_moon_sand_20_lbs?&query=tahitian&queryType=0&offset=.

Actually... pretty much everything!

If you are looking to plant with it then it is a few bucks more but the Flourite Black Sand is really nice! MOPS sells it as well for just ovwer $20.00 a bag.

MOPS WAS cheaper on just about everything!!

Guess I can cross Big Al's off my short list of good Cdn dealers..

The Flourite sand affects your PH a bit, whereas this other stuff doesn't, so..

Alright I have too much time on my hands... LOL

But just to see I decided to recreate your order at MOPS and Petsandponds just to see... the results are mixed into your numbers above. Only priced those items that were exact... if there is no info then either of the other two do not carry it.
BA=Big Als
MP=MOPS
PP=Petsandponds

Conclusion... BigAls is a rip off!

I would call them and try to enforce their price match guarantee!

Something didnt come trough correctly on that list. Big Als was the only one to carry the lighting... so BigAls was cheapest on the canister filter... Mind you I personally think the Eheim are over-rated and went with Rena XP series for all my tanks

I don't know what the cost of shipping substrate would be from the online retailers. I've seen bags of Tahitian MS @ King Ed's Pet Centre in Burnaby. IIRC, around $30 per bag.

Shipping from Mops is based on how much you spend

If you use Canada post

$0 to $99 is $6.95
$100 to $199 is $3.95
$200 & over is free

I have used them several times without problem.

Don't they and Pets & Ponds charge extra freight for heavy items (like substrate) and oversize stuff (like long light tubes)?

It does look like there is an additional charge but their website doesn't say how much.

Looks like it would be $10.78 per bag

Eheim are over-rated

How so?

KnaveTO
Jan 21st 2008, 07:32 PM
You are paying for the name and german engineering. Rena is a French company and their product is considered by many to be comparable and easier to prime and maintain than the Eheims at a lot less money.

When I first purchased my tanks I researched the Ehiem, Marineland and Rena lines and found Rena to be more value for money. Furthermore after talking to BA's (who kept trying to sell me the Ehiem...) I got the guy there to admit that priming is much easier and the basket system is a lot less messy.

Hmm..

Interesting..

Well, I guess I won't know myself till I try them both..

I've used both an Eheim Ecco 2232 canister and the Rena XP series. I now only use the Rena XP2 and XP3 on my turtle tanks. They are cheaper, perform at least as well as if not better than the Ecco series, have more room for media (which is also cheaper) and come with more options for mounting the intake and output pipes.

Yes, I've heard Rena makes very good cartridge filters, too..

Just one data point to add. I've only got one canister filter right now, because it's the only one I've ever had to buy! It's an Eheim 'Classic' model 2213 on a 29 gallon tank. It's been in continuous service since 1992, and I haven't had to replace anything mechanical or otherwise on it. I think some of the sponge media disintegrated at some point. It can be a chore to clean and prime. Also, the Ehiems have a lower flow rate than other canisters so this might be an issue if you need lots of current. It also come with green hoses and intake/output tubes that some find ugly looking.

When I bought the filter, the competition were Fluval canisters (that have had many design changes since) and Marineland Magnums, which I understand have been retired.

I can't really comment on any of the other offerings in the market, as I haven't had the need for another canister.

Yes, it'd be better if the hoses were clear..

Is that what the Rena's are?

KnaveTO
Jan 22nd 2008, 02:27 PM
Yes the Rena hoses are clear. There is one catch to Rena that I have shortly become aware of and that is if you need replacemtn parts and/or hoses you have to purchase them from Rena. They use a 16mm size hose which is different from most others who use odd sided hoses.

doug_Z
Jan 22nd 2008, 02:58 PM
Yeah, clear would definately be better..

But whatchagonnado? ::(:

This week (until Friday) you can get free shipping over a hundred dollars too, if you enter 'free shipping' in the comments (they'll take it off manually before charging you). However, it doesn't apply to oversize/heavy items. They've cut their prices to compensate for the strong dollar, so that might make up for a bit.
