Just wondering where a good place to buy would be..
Anyone ordered fish online?
Can you do that, even?

You sure can order fish online, there's tons of places that have online shopping & check out our CAC auction. Just look to the right of 'Quick Links' and click on 'Auction'.
Here are a few places that I shop.
CAC Auction
Aquabid.Com
Private Breeders
That Fish Place (Tonawanda, NY)
RiverWonders.Com
BelowWater.Com
Aquanourriplus.com
Alternative Aquariums (Burlington, Ontario)
A few of us around here like to trade as well.

Yeah, those places are in Ontario, though, no?
Probably wouldn't be able to get them the same day or close to that in BC..
Or are there any in BC?
I'll check out those places you mention,. though, thanks!

Some are in Ontario some are not. I've bought fish from people as far as Vancouver Island as well as in BC & in California. Same day I'm afraid not, next day and two day expresspost I've used without problems as well.
On the auction sites people from all over Canada list their auctions. Sorry I can't be of more help specifically for BC though. I've yet to get to BC. I'm orgionally from the US & haven't been here long enough to travel all the places I'd like to BC is on the list for sure though. :) I'm sure some BC'ers will pipe up with specific stores soon enough.
I've also bought from Pacific Aquatics which I believe may be in CA.

Hmm, im not too sure about any freshwater in BC.. only Salt Water
But for shipping fish, the shipper normally ships them overnight UPS or Purolator, or the likes, in order to get them to you as fast as possible.

Check out our list of Online Merchants (http://www.canadianaquariumconnection.com/forum/showthread.php?t=348). The only BC ones I see on that list who ship freshwater livestock (apologies if I've missed any) are:
Pacific Aquatics (http://www.pacificaquatics.ca/)
Puppies, Fish & Critters (http://www.puppiesfishcritters.com/)
Also check out:
Private Breeder's Directory (http://www.canadianaquariumconnection.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=62)
CAC Auction (http://www.canadianaquariumconnection.com/ClassAuction/)
How quickly you can expect to your order to be filled and what shipping options are available will be dependant upon the seller.

J & L Aquatics,

and Ocean Aquatics.

Just salt water, eh?
Nuts..
Kinda figured, with most of their gear being for salt tanks..

Yah, i dunno anybody that sells freshwater in BC.. it kinda sucks.. so your best bet would be to find somebody from Ontario that has a really good reputation, and Live on Arrival policy, and order from them.

I haven't dealt with Puppies, Fish & Critters (http://www.puppiesfishcritters.com/) before but I have purchased fish (& supplies) from Pacific Aquatics (http://www.pacificaquatics.ca/) and Paul is a great to deal with. He's still working on putting stuff up on the website, so just email or phone him about the fish you're looking for.

Yup..
Will do..
I'll ask if he doesn't have the fish I need, wether he can GET them at least..
Same with the plants..

Just an FYI, I've imported fish from hobbyists in the US and had them spend a week in transit. ( 3 day express really means 5 business days, plus the weekend !)
If they're packed properly, fish will survive a week in a box.
They severely stressed and hungry when they arrive, but so far, I've had good success.

Visited the local pet store this afternoon..
As I expected, they didn't have anything I wanted, besides some nice looking Pineapple Swordtails, long finned danios, and some wee leopard plecos (but you know, 3 out of 6 ain't bad, for a hole in the wall petshop in the middle of nowhere..LOL)..
But they say they can GET me what I want, out of a place in Vancouver..
We'll see, I guess..
I also emailed those places you guys mentioned..
Paul at Pacific Aquatics got back to me this evening, and he says neither the fish or the plants should present a problem..
So that's good.. :)

The only problem this time of year, is no heatpack lasts that long :wideeyed: .

He'll treat you right. :secret:He's expecting some beautiful albino Swordtails & premium Platy's in a few weeks - all privately bred by a certain highly respected breeder, but you didn't hear it from me:mask:.

Albinos??
You're getting those fish for their vibrant colours, no? :)
And like I say, I won't need the fish or plants till mid-july, and may very well be able to pick them up myself..

Hence the no posting about new arrivals.
It's ok though, it gives me some time to finish up the work I'm doing in the fishroom.
I'm getting ready for the next big project. :red_dance:

Huh..
So it's just the pink eyes that are "Albinoish"?
Weird.. :)
Melody
Jan 25th 2008, 07:15 PM
There are several types of albinoism, especially in nature. In fishkeeping, for the most part, an albino is any fish who expresses the red eye gene. Albinos are challenging quite often and prized for the variance.

Add to my list:
Melody
Pam
Mykiss
Forgot about them. I walked in Big Al's the other day for salt and they all wanted to know where the heck I've been lol. Private Breeders are the best!

Jan 25th 2008, 09:12 PM
Yeah, I just learned there's a cory breeder up here, but he's getting out of it..
Shoot.. :(
Melody
Jan 26th 2008, 08:12 AM
Private breeders are great, but store owners who responsibly source their fish are worth their weight in (my) gold. Some of the best store owners are hobbyists and/or breeders - methinks this is no coincidence.

Yeah, it'd be nice to live in a big center and have the pick of the litter..
Thanks goodness for the internet. Even in little towns, there's not a monopoly..

Jan 26th 2008, 11:28 AM
yah, we have 'big centers' here in PG, but they still all are on the lower levelish for quality.. We need some actual 'Fish Stores'.
doug_Z
Jan 26th 2008, 11:32 AM
Word..
There used to be a really good one in Sruceland when I was living in PG in the early 90's, pretty much where Petcetera is now..
Had a HUGE selection.. ::(:

Jan 27th 2008, 11:55 PM
Doug was it Pets'n'Things before Petcetera or was that the one before ChowTown? I tell you I have these little fish books and the price tag says" Pets'n'Things" but I can not remember witch spot that store was at, we are talking 92-93 some were around then.
Slip wasn't there a fish store in the old Canadian Tire building a few years ago?? I remember being told about it but when I was able to go it was gone.

Jan 28th 2008, 05:21 AM
Petsn'things.. Nice Fish selection!! :(
And yes, there was a pet store BESIDE the old Can Tire building, where that.. I think it's a hot tub store is now..
Mrs.JP
Jan 29th 2008, 04:31 PM
Hay Doug thanks it was BESIDE. Was it a fish only store? I was too sick at the time to go and see it and then it was gone.
:offtopic: How cold did you get?? Vanderhouf -43 with windchill on sunday, we were close to that. TOOOO BLOODY COLD:Holiday-1:
doug_Z
Jan 29th 2008, 06:11 PM
Yeah, I don't think I ever went in there, either..
Just the Petsn'things..
It's STILL -35.. God knows how cold with the wind chill thrown in..
