View Full Version : 1 gallon fish bowl - suggestions?

I have a 1G fish bowl that I am going to put on my desk at the office. I was originally planning to keep a 5G with UGF and lights, but I don't have any electrical outlets that I can use. Plus, that tank is now home to my cherry shrimp. I also had a 2G with an UGF but my GF has "borrowed" that for her betta.
What fish besides a betta would do OK in a small tank with no filtration or aeration? I can put a little java moss in there but there isn't enough lighting for any other plants. The room temp is usually about 72F but sometimes a bit higher.

H. Furmosa is the first thing that comes to mind. I'm not so sure that putting any fish into a 1G tank without water movement will turn out well, but the Het's are tough. You'll have the best luck with a species which prefers slow-moving water. The others would have higher oxygen requirements.
I'd probably go with Shrimp or a couple of Spixi snails.

How bout a couple of Hets? They're tiny enough and would do ok with bare minimums.
Or a nice fancy male Guppy or 2? Maybe even a couple of male Endlers might work? although not sure if they would be too happy with lower temps and being as they are so active and chasing each other about non-stop such close quarters might not make them too happy either lol.
Some rarer snails maybe? I'm sure Ms. Melody could hook you up with something exotic that won't breed like crazy or jump ship on ya lol:yes:

Is the lack of aeration going to be a problem? That's the only reason I was thinking of a betta. Because of the small volume of water I would be doing water changes twice a week.

It depends on the requirements of the creature in the bowl. If they come from fast moving waters they'll need well-oxygenated water / current. Bettas can surface breathe so they have that covered, as can snails. If you use tiny fish such as Het's, they wouldn't require much oxygen based on size alone. Bowls usually have less surface area, reducing the oxygen levels that much more, but if yours is open that won't apply.
