dafishman and chem made me start thinking about moss. I grow java moss pretty good are they all that easy? I think if they were all that easy then everyone would have them and they are still hard to find. :wideeyed: Which kinds are ok in regular light and grow easy like java moss? Where do you get them? :FishQuestion:

The easies - (if you can grow regular java moss, these should also do well for you)Christmas, willow, singapore, taiwan, erect, weeping, string, and a species or 2 of fissidens.

You can get them by trading your moss or other stuff, watching the auction posts in here, aquabid, online plant suppliers, for sale/trade sections of fish/plant forums or placing a wanted ad in one, fishstores, fishclubs, fish auctions..

The other types from what I know would benefit from more light and co2.
I'll leave those types up to those that have had them :)

As Dafishman said most are pretty easy to grow. They can be prone to algae build up if proper water conditions aren't met. There should be a greater supply out there in BC than there is in Ontario. They are less common because it would be hard to make money from them. They grow very slowly and are difficult to "package" for a fish store to handle. In addition it takes awhile to get used to them to be able to identify them.

Here are pics of some that I have:

Nice field guide to mosses

I used to have a few different kinds and some mini pellia. I put them in a new tank with way too much light (LFS sold me a bill of goods) and had some problem algae.
Once the hair algae got in there it was all over, no way to separate them. So I'd recommend only putting moss in a well-established tank, and if you see hair algae getting in there, you'll have to be ruthless and only save parts you are certain are algae free. I left it too long and only saved one species by snipping the newest growth and putting it in a different tank to regenerate.

It is funny that you should say that. When I received it as a trade that is what I was told it was. I then sent a sample to a fellow in the States and he IDed as Fissidens zippelianus which appears to be different than Fissidens nobilis. I haven't really had a chance to dig around on killies.com to see the difference though.

Here are two pics that I dug up. What are your thoughts?

If Edgezilla is the fellow I am thinking of he has some experience growing out mosses and plants.

Of great interest to me now is some of the Bladderworts and to a lesser extent some of the Liverworts; specifically I am looking for Utricularia graminiflora. I had a pot in the summer but it pooped out on me when I changed the tank around. The stuff doesn't like to be moved. I have not seen it around here since then.

Anyone have access to that one for trade or sale?

Edgezilla

I just spent the while go through killies looking for something else but here is a link with F. zippelianus and F. nobilis designations.

I have just been offered up some Star Moss. What a treat trying to find accurate info on that one! All of these goofy common names for mosses creates a great deal of confusion.

Great thread idea and fantastic info/pic's coming in. I've always wondered this stuff myself... we may have to compile this one for the article section when its done. Thanks everyone!

Well, from the original photo, it looked exactly like my sadly beat up F. nobilis I got from over a year ago when grown submersed. Can't really compare emersed fissiden nobilis and submersed fissiden nobilis.. They look a little different not as wide submersed from my experience. The nobilis chem posted is definately emersed grown nobilis. I have them popping up in random pot of emersed crypts.

I don't think I am the guy you are thinking about. I don't specialize in mosses or fissiden. I focus more on echinodorus, and crypts. I used to keep weird looking stem plants.

I was at Aquarium west the other day. They are getting a shipment of plants in and should have u. graminiflora in the order.

You people are lucky out there. You have California, Seattle and the Pacific Rim right at your doorstep.

It is not what I would consider to be a moss for beginners. I have had it for awhile now and can keep it alive but not much in the way of new growth. I am going to give it one more try in a 20g with 130W and CO2. If it doesn't work out I will just sell it or give it away and let someone else give it a go.

Thanks Chem :)

The prob I have is my tank is 1.5wpg and no pressurized co2.

I'd be interested in the moss samples though. And low light plants if any ?
Pls send me a pm and prices if possible ? I'd prolly need shipped, I have paypal
too. I'll send a further pm from work today thanks :)
