I'm looking at these as dithers for an African shelldweller tank. I was told that they belong to the Killifish family and found in many of the waters in Africa. Thinking about a little shoal of 8 to 10 in a 20 gallon long tank. pH 7.9, GH around 10 dH.

Does anybody have any experience with these fish? I was considering a smaller group of dwarf neon rainbows but was suggested that the lampeye's might be a better fit.

Way too hard and the pH is way too high from what I've read, but I haven't kept them in years and then only briefly. They could be much more adaptable than I'm aware of. I bought them on a whim but there was only two left. When I found out they liked groups and they seemed so shy & unhappy, I gave them to another hobbyist who had a shoal.

Yes I know, my vast experience has been truly enlightening  .

I've no experience with any of the lampeyes, but there is at least one species that comes from Lake Tanganyika: Lamprichthys tanganicanus. I don't think they are easy to get a hold of, but it might be worth looking around for them.
