I can see where it gets its name. How long does it take for it to fill in and look natural like that?

As mosses go Flame grows relatively quickly. Depending on how much you seed the piece of driftwood, the light and if your are running CO2 it would take about 2 months for it to fill out like this.

Does seeding moss on driftwood thrive better than on an artificial structure?

Mosses will grow not attached to anything but they may not take on the charactoristic look of that moss. They attach to driftwood better than artificial structures because the rhizomes/roots can work their way into the wood but not plastic.

I always wondered how it would do on something like Tufa Rock...

I've got a big hairy head of Java moss on a big chunk of Tufa in my shrimp tank.
Can't speak for other mosses, but I imagine it should work.

... she says like she'll ever get around to it  ... but it was a good thought I think, with all of its texture & holes. Do most mosses prefer acidic water? I thought I read that somewhere. Tufa might not make them happy if that is the case. Java apparently likes it fine though!

Chem, is that a Moss wall in the background? Beautiful! What did you use for the base? I am currently planning a wall.
Very nice Flame Moss, I have been searching for some lately. Where did you get yours?

First off, Welcome to CAC sixpakje !
If the Flame Moss acts similar to Java Moss, it will attach to pieces of the substrate, as it grows it should grow up the driftwood.
I would like to see more pictures of the tank ! Looks good !

Netherlands, COOL!!
Yes you can grow it as a carpet but it is highly prone to algae because of its dense verticle growth. If your bioload and feeding habits are low you will be fine though. Here is a link to constructing a wall using Christmas moss. Use the same process for your Flame but mount it horizontally instead.

PintoHawk - PM me your mailing address and I will send you some under the condition that you give some for FREE to someone else in your area when you have grown it out, which BTW is very easy.
