I have rocks on the bottom of the one aquarium and I want to put something on the bottom of the other. Whats best? Rocks or sand? By rocks I mean those pebbles everyone has.. that are colourful

Depends on who's going in the tanks. For my bottom dwellers some of the tanks have rocks and are barebottom, some sand and no rocks and some completely barebottom. I like barebottoms for snails, fry and shrimp as I tend to feed them heavily and it makes cleaning the tank a lot easier.

Sand will get into your filters and wear on them so be mindful of that. In the past I've washed my sand first added it to an empty tank and then filled it up slowly. I wait a day or two for all the dust to settle change out the water, dechlorinater & a cycled filter. Then 1-3 days later depending on test results to make sure that water paramaters are ammonia/nitrite free, I then add my fish.

I've never used sand but I think it would be harder to keep clean. I know that even with gravel, the larger it is, the easier it is to gravel vac.

I have the sand for the loaches as they will cover themselves with it. I don't find it that hard to clean cause there isn't tiny holes for junk to fall into.

I also have flourite then a layer of sand for my plants. Admittedly I also have a gravel tank. But the others are sand and flourite (3 all together)

I have tanks with black sand and other with Eco-complete... find there isn't too much of a difference when cleaning... just the technique is a bit different.
