Is there such a thing as a peaceful cichlid? And which species? any suggestions?

I really like the kribs. I got one female can I have 2 females without fighting?. Got a Firemouth also...just one.

Is there a way not to let ciclids spawn? If so what is it? I had read dropping the temp. helps with that.

I also really like the Geophagus and have 2 already of the Satanica Perca (sp?) it's easier to say Demon Perch. Wouldn't mind more.

Keyhole cichlids (Cleithracara maronii) are very peaceful... I have kept them in community tanks with corys and danios and they haven't bothered a soul to date.

German Blue Rams (Microgeophagus ramierezi) are peaceful and suitable for community tanks. As for not letting them spawn, just get all males.

You could look into Bolivian rams as well. Quite peaceful.

If your looking for peaceful cichlids, the firemouth may not have been the best choice. They can be quite teritorrial, and tend to be bullies towards smaller fish.(Atleast in my experiences with them) If you like the geophagus, why not add a couple different species? I'm a huge fan of the Geophagus, and keep/breed a couple different species.

Amaruq, you've got mail!

Hey Mel, any shipping tips?

You'll need a heatpack & styro box this time of year. Breather Bags & Bag Buddies don't hurt.... if you need any of that let me know and I'd be happy to give the supplies to you. I believe I owe you a fave or 10...lol. About the only thing I don't have is a shipping box made and I'm out of styro again. They're easy to do though - just cut styro to fit.

I want to see some cichlids on that auction, now that you're about to become an experienced shipper::D: .

I have also heard that turning the water temp. down will discourage breeding. I had Cichlids years ago and they bred like crazy before we found out how to slow it down. It never did STOP them, I must warn you, but it did control a little.

Frontosa's are a very mild and peaceful; but you would need a large tank and I also have 15 German Blue Rams in with my Discus fish and it is a really nice and quite shoal of fish.

You can safely bet that pretty much any of the dwarf species of cichlids are relatively peaceful. I say relatively as any cichlid will get agressive and/or territorial when they are breeding.

I have various species of cichlids (both African and South American) that cohabitate in my tanks. I do however keep the tanks heviy planted an lots of wood and the like to help create artificial boundaries that they can establish as their territories. The species I keep are Kribs (will not stop breeding), Angels, Apistos, Rams (both German and Bolivian), checkerboard cichlids and some shell dwelling cichlids. All are fine in their various tanks.
