I have one bronze cory who developed a white protrusion on his side a couple of days ago. I removed him to a quarantine tank and dosed with Melafix and Pimafix.
I also have a female zebra danio who I thought was just very pregnant. But today I noticed that all her scales are sticking out. That's a sign of dropsy right? I have removed her to the QT as well. My water parameters are fine as usual. No ammonia, nitrite or nitrate (plants use it all up). pH is at 7.8 and temp is 76F. I checked and my DIY CO2 does not cause any swings in the pH since Calgary tap water is very well buffered. Any thoughts on what might have caused this?

I'm sorry to hear that - how frustrating for you when you're just getting things going. ::(:
Could be a virus... Lymphocystis (http://www.aquarticles.com/articles/management/Lawler_Lymphocystis.html) maybe? If it gets into the bloodstream it can lead to internal problems which could explain the bloating in the Danio and it has 'cysts'. It's reasonably common. Just a guess of course, but have a read and see what you think.

((((Grand))))
I had a betta that had dropsy...It was awful to watch it die and it took some time. Dropsy is hard to treat.
If the scales are poking out like a pine cone then chances are it's dropsy. Mine got it from fighting with the other betta and dammaged internal organs.
How is the cory doing?

Have a close look at the white protrusion on the cory. Could it be an anchor worm?

The danio died this morning but the cory is still alive. Luckily no sign of illness in any of the other fish.

That's too bad, but hopefully you nipped it before the population was infected. Any idea what it is yet? I'm hearing about cysts/ulcers more and more these days so any opportunity to learn more about it is helpful.

Is it possible the danio got injured in some way?
Those little beggars move like crazy! I'm just wondering if internal injury cause it to die?

Whatever it is, it's not going away...

is it a typoe of fungus? Can you try the malachite green? When i had the fungus on the tetras it worked..I'm not sure with cory's though?

I still think we're looking at Lymphocystis or a similar affliction like Glugea. Danios seem to be involved in a lot of the info I'm reading too, but Danios seem to carry a lot of diseases period. Its the only thing I can think of if it's not a fungus.
He looks sad in the first pic. I hope he pulls through!

Sorry to hear the danio didn't make it. How's the poor little cory doing today?

Well, he's eating well and it looks like the growth is getting smaller. If it goes away completely, how long should I isolate the cory before putting him back in the main tank?

Good question. If its what I'm guessing it is, it is very contageous but I don't know for how long. I'd keep him isolated for a good long time, just in case.
