This story got me thinking and I bet this is more common than I'd like to believe. The pond owner moves, the house sits empty or the new tenants just don't want the fish or know anything about them and suddenly fish are being neglected and starving. I guess they figure that fish live outside and do fine so there shouldn't be a problem. In this case, they suspect the fish had never been in a proper environment and I can easily agree, since a pond to house 60 Koi would have to be how big?

That is so sad. Those poor fish. I don't understand people who can just abandon them to suffer. I hope the word gets out to folks in the area who seriously want to adopt some of these fish and will care for them properly.

Wish I could go and get some, poor little guys.
Its exactly how I ended up with my MIL's fish. She was moving in October and planned to leave the house where it sat until it had an offer. When I asked about the fish in her pond she laughed and said they'd end up as 'fish-sickles'. Don't get me started on that one, needless to say I took all of them home.
Its seems to be very common, that people dump off their fish or leave them behind unfortunately. ::(:

You can only look after so many, Kat. Let's home there are a few more people like you in the area.

Koi are beautiful fish so I'm sure they'll find homes. I suppose its better than wild release but for Heaven's sake, euthanize them if you don't want to give them away.
The good news is that the neighbours didn't want them to suffer and the animal shelter responded. That means more people are catching on that these creatures can suffer just as much as a neglected dog, they just can't vocalize it.
