Found this feeding off my bird feeder that I had attached to my kitchen window, eating at sunflower seeds with it's long tongue ... it is called a Northern Flicker, adult male, red-shafted, according to the website.

Enjoy, it gave me about 20 minutes of fun trying to catch it on film.
Cheers

It didn't stay too long though, there were 2 of them and they both wanted some seeds ....

You should keep an eye out to see if they return... once they figure out you're providing a nice snack, they just might.

I was contemplating putting out a piece of fruit but was more afraid that it might catch the crows' eyes than anything else ... LOL
I might put in more seeds tomorrow then, they have been around the the backyard a few times now, but have never had the courage to come so close to the bird feeder; till today.

The weather may have made them a little more desperate for food, hence the forced bravery.

They might also like suet. We have one that shows up in the fall, but never seems to stay around.
Beautiful birds. If I remember right they are related to the woodpecker, but of course have no idea where my bird books are.
Thanks for sharing.

That's the first thing they reminded me of - must be that beak.

I have it on good authority that this is indeed a woodpecker. A friend of mine who has been an avid birdwatcher for years just saw your pics. His comments:
"Gorgeous bird. Flickers aren't merely related to woodpeckers; they actually are a woodpecker."

Aye, they are 100 % bonafide woodpeckers ... LOL
It was pecking at my boards outside when it couldn't reach the seeds .... not a good thing but I haven't seen them since, prolly won't until the wind storm is over ...
