I'll be returning 2 -8"ish Koi and a large fancytail to my parents (300g) pond soon, as well as some 3-4" comets.
This was the 1st time i've provided a "winter home" for them, and is also the 1st time they've had somewhat ample space and regular water changes. I have to say that thanks to CAC, they are all much better off than would be expected. The growth that i've seen in them the past few months leaves me no choice to limit what dad's pond is going to be stocked with. I still plan on a pond of my own this year, but am a little nervous about what to do come fall. It looks like i'll be wintering them all next season, and by then i'm sure i'll have no choice to re-home some, but would like to keep as many as i can.
I guess the master plan would be to build a huge tank in the basement.
(I bought the last 4 of those $5 "tank stands") and was thinking of making a elongated u shaped tank. That being about 8'wide with 4' side extensions. Would that kind of shape work(?) or has MTS gotten the better of me?

Glad to hear your Dad's fish have done well over the winter and that your pond plans are still going ahead. The fact that your making long term plans for the care of the pond inhabitants is awesome. So many people don't stop to think about it.

I do know they make U-shaped and other shaped acrylic tanks but I don't know how feasible and/or expensive it would be to build a glass tank (if that's what you're thinking). You'd have to look into the thickness requirements of the glass as well as consider the overall weight of the tank. Or are you considering building a plywood tank? Having had no experience in building a tank, I'm just tossing out ideas. Others who have built their own will probably be able to provide insight into construction ideas, issues, or concerns.
:Think:Adequate filtering and water movement in a tank that size and shape might prove to be interesting. (multiple filters, I assume would take care of that).
I look forward to hearing what others have to say and the project itself if you go ahead with it.

Another idea might be to use the RubberMaid (or similar) stock tub. They come in various sizes up to 300 gallons.
Most farm supply stores would carry them and they would be much cheaper than buying any kind of an aquarium.
For filtration, a cannister like an FX5 could be used, or with a little DIY, a smaller aquarium or tub with a bulkhead fitting and a small pump could be used to fashion a sump filter.

I'll have to look into those stock tubs, but will have to really measure things out, as it's not a full basement.
I had a pretty good grin on my face as i pulled into town today.
The car ahead of me at the 1st set of lights had a sticker on the back window.
Normally i don't pay much attention to these things, but there was something about custom aquariums that caught my eye.:err:
Glad he was stopped 'cause i didn't want to have to tailgate him.

It would be interesting to check out what is available in custom aquariums (even though I'm sure it's not in the budget). It might give you some ideas.

 Addicted aquarium hobbyists stocking vendors - imagine the headlines! I'm surprised we don't have people breaking into stores on December 25th to see what the Boxing Day sales will be and to grab them before anyone else does. I'm sure nobody but the most pathetically addicted would do that though.
Time to get the catsuit & mask to the cleaners....

Then you probably don't want to hear that my 'have fun when you're 50 fund is non-existant.:twitcy:
