Anyone got any freshwater shrimps?

I've got Taiwan Blue shrimps, Cherry shrimps, and crystal red shrimps. I'm just wondering what some others may have...

As many would agree they can be great little algae eaters!

Just a few cherries, like a hundred or two...
Kinda less than bright red though, some of them...Perhaps the less coulourful should become puffer snacks?
Wish I'd grabbed some last time BA had 'em, they were beauts, even at $6.99. I can't imagine what they would go for here, yesterday I saw small japonicas at LFS for $8.10 each

LOL I'll be sending Mr. SB a box in a couple of weeks if you two want to work some deals. Its no problem to pack them together.

I have or have had all of the above. Some I do fine with, others die the minute I drop them into my water practically - dunno why. I have heard that some are very sensitive to Nitrates and since I have to feed so much in order to nourish the resident snails, it has occured to me that it might be Nitrates that cause the problem.

I'm into selective breeding so Steve's thoughts on culling intrigues me. I know a girl in the snail circles who bought low grade CRS and they are now one of the highest grades - she selectively bred them there all by herself. I was thoroughly impressed with that. I mean, I know others did it too and that's how the high grades came to be, but I assumed it was a very involved process which would require far more shrimp than I have. Long searches for better quality to add to your line, careful records, etc etc etc. Apparently that isn't the case, at least not all the time.

I used to have a few algae eating shrimps but I think my loaches found them to be rather tastey...not sure how their tiny mouthes would be able to tackle a half inch shrimp, but apparently it must be possible because they all dissappeared shortly after I introduced one to the other...lol

talking about eating shrimps..... I used to have a bunch of aquatic frogs in the tank of at least over 100 shrimps and one day I noticed that the frog grabbed and started munching on the live shrimp! Well, from then on I learnt a lesson.... I do have lots of shrimps now! :;-):

How rude of creatures, I mean really, don't they know that captive life should be more civilized? You don't act the same in the house as you do outdoors - kids learn it, why can't our aquatic pets?

Darn that food chain anyways!

:Devilish:

This is the lady's CRS that I was telling you about:

I used to keep alot of the basic ghost shrimp in my community tank until I noticed how big of a shrimp a very small blue german ram could eat

Now I only keep flower shrimp ( singapore wood shrimp) in there, I do still keep the ghost shrimp but they seem to do well in my snail/betta tank. Their numbers never seem to increase, I don't think the water parameters are ideal for it, but they must be happy as I can always see eggs in the females bellies!

My cana did the same thing to all of my cherries! All of sudden he cruised over and snatched the poor thing. I was wondering where the heck they were going. Needless to say Mr. Cana lives with the haustrums now.

WOW! I could go shopping in your Shrimp room! I'll have to look up half of those species. I have loved the Snowball Shrimp ever since I first saw them - such an interesting creature to look at.

Just goes to show what you can breed on your own if you want to put the time & effort into it. The challenge to improve the creature is half the fun for me. The problem is you often have to wait until maturity to see the potential. With Shrimp that doesn't involve as much room as it does with fish.

Now that's dedication! That's awesome - we need someone in Canada who specializes in Shrimp. A lot of people have some species, but I don't know of anyone who has that many. Good for you! Maybe you'll write a book about them someday.

Looks like a good one! They have some Livebearer books in German too. They seem to write books that are far more detailed & they contain far more advanced information.

If I send you the Livebearer books, you could read me a chapter every night, ok?

Hmmm the huzbo is fluent in German...I wonder how long it would take to annoy him into reading/translating books about livebearers and shrimp? I'm thinking not very long at all.

PS
If I should ever go missing its definately him, look for me in the 150 gallon k?
Thanks!

If he wasn't laid out on his back, I'm sure he'd be packing my bags and my python. Then again him being laid out does mean it would be quite some time before he noticed new fish in the basement. Hmmmmmmmmmm

I know! lol and the scarey thing is I probably would have considered the same thing, except I am out of room. Got most of my tanks when hubby went away snowmobiling. Had to do something with my spare time to keep me out of trouble.

That's the best excuse for a spouse you know, "Of all of the things that I could do as a bored married person, this is a good choice." Then send them to one of the 'bored housewives' sites  .

I'm well past being bored and am bordering obsessive when it comes to fish...Allthough we are going to look at a house tonight...Then it will be the joys of moving 400 plus gallons of water a half an hour awhile and keeping everyone alive.
