Hello everyone,
For those of you who wonder what a person could see at a big killie convention, or just wonder what killies are like, these photos were sent to the AKA mailing list. They are shots taken of the fish in the show at last month's American Killifish Association convention in Syracuse NY.

Wow, gorgeous fish. Absolutely amazing colors and finnage. I never knew there was such a wide variety of killies. I can definitely see why people are intrigued with them.

And how long did you spend at the convention before you could drag yourself away?

Well, with beer being portable, I managed to spend a lot of time going from 3 gallon showtank to showtank, studying and just plain enjoying the diversity of fishes there.

As one of those evil purist types, I have to point one cool thing out - with the exception of the australe gold, and the gold gardneri, none of the fish pictured are the result of direct selection, at least that I recall. Certainly, people breed their prettiest specimens for shows, but in killie circles, it's frowned on to select finnage, etc.. There are also no hybrids or even population crosses permitted in killie shows. These are killies as long long evolution made them - quite the thing to see.

Anyhow, the hobbyists I find most like killiekeepers are livebearer fans, and there is huge crossover between the oddball livebearer crew and the killie-crowd.

Well I wouldn't cross livebearers if nature made them that pretty to begin with either! lol Purists aren't evil, they're just misunderstood.

Thanks for sharing the link. I've been on the Killilist for a couple of years or more and even when I don't have Killies I find the posts interesting. There's a lot of experience in that association.
