View Full Version : Just a thought

Here is an idea I tried to put forward on another forum that I belong to / they thought it may be a little to ambitious ... maybe so but I will present the idea to you folks and see what you think....this site may be better suited to try it out... because it is Canadian wide
My suggestion was to start a BAP program that could be controlled/ followed etc. on the site giving the members inclined that way something to work towards and participate in.
I know that it would take a lot of work to start up but at the end of the day it could be very rewarding for the site and the people who are members of this site...
I invision several volunteer spotters of fry from various parts of Canada and perhaps a portion of the fry could be donated to the site for auction and the proceeds could be given to charity / or costs incured to run this site etc..
what do you think.... ?

Thanks for the suggestion! That's very ambitious indeed...lol....but I think it's feasible in an informal sense. It really doesn't need us so much, just a section. Our volunteers have their hands full already, but if someone wants to organize it I don't think it would be a problem to give it a home. We just couldn't guarantee that any of it is accurate.
Although I'm not in the position to decline donations, seeing the auction alive with offspring would be good enough for me. If we want a successful auction we have to work it at the beginning with minimal returns (although we're all making sales & finding treasures already, which rocks). As long as participation keeps up then it will grow and that's when everyone will see the big rewards. It's funny how many people think something should launch and be huge by day two with no community effort whatsoever. :wideeyed:
So let's hear it... pros? cons?

You have such an eloquent way with words Melody....LOL unlike myself
Participation is always the key in most endeavours......
The auction does surprise me a little as there is not much activety there / I am not sure how long it has been going on , as I have not been around that long on this site but it does seem to need a shot of adrenaline....
Back to the main idea.... You are probably correct that it would have to be an honour system sort of thing in some form / and you know what that is probably ok to because its all about the hobby and friendship and making new friendships etc. etc.
So again ...thinking about the auction and its state and the concept of the suggestion I am making / it comes down to PARTICIPATION by the members in all aspects of the forum //// maybe this has to be worked on before a new concept can work.... is patience in order for the site to grow and concepts to succeed ? /// I am not sure perhaps...
Now was that a little scrambled or what! LOL

The auction was just launched a few months ago, so that's to be expected. People are wary of shipping & don't have heatpacks & so on quite often, making Winter an off time. It will pick up, but not if everyone sits around waiting for us to 'make it' and then deciding it didn't work. Aquabid started the same way, but people wanted it so they worked it. We wanted a Canadian forum and for several months it was largely a bunch of mod's yacking...lol...but we've grown much faster than most because we worked it. Are we seeing a theme here?
A BAP program would be no different. It will only be successful if people are consistently involved and working it. Many times these ideas are received enthusiastically and then they die because....
I can't hear you!
Because nobody worked it! :twitcy:
When something community oriented doesn't work it's because people didn't want it bad enough to make it work. I can market until the whales come home, but it's the people who make a community successful.
So that's the only issue I can see with it. There would have to be enough people who are into making it happen to keep at it.

What's a BAP program?
Thanks for asking that, I was wondering what it is too.

BAP stands for Breeder's Award Program which I gather often local clubs often get involved with. I gather it involves registering in the program and then successfully breeding a species and meeting a certain criteria which is ususally verified to receive the award.

I believe that the CAOAC already has something to that effect. And speaking of them... has CAC ever thought of membership with them? Or do they not offer memberships to forums? If they don't I would wonder why... as we are a club... of sorts.

Never were truer words spoken! well stated...
The aqua bid site is a good comparison..... it would be great to get some good canadian breeders on line here / I was unaware that the auction site was new so I understand it will take time to grow on people...as you know I am not shy about paying shipping for quality and if anyone was to ask me about that I would tell them flat out that everything that I have purchased on this site has been 1st class and I have purchased from both ends of the country...LOL
I have purchased on aqua bid a couple of times and have had mixed expierences.... shipping issues arise across border purchases.. trust me! That is one more reason a good canadian auction site such as yours is important for us to participate in and contribute on the buying and selling side of the site....

I can say from my own point of view, the auction is great. I have trouble keeping up with requests/bids for most of the fish I decide to sell. (Hence my partial absence of late)
An informal BAP sounds like a good idea to me, Melody is correct though in keeping it maintained and active takes time.

I have no idea what their membership requirements are but I shall investigate.

This is a great idea! I know many people have problems finding Canadian breeders and not many are on AB. If we could some how get something similar set up I think it would be a great hit! I know I would use it :D
