Had to go to Shoppers Drug Mart tonight and I have a field day in drug stores - all sorts of supplements & healthy stuff. I needed to refresh supplies in that regard for the homemade foods so I had some fun. I like to stick to naturally sourced supplements and they've often got some odd herbs.
I found this big container of green vegetable powder that looked interesting. There was a list a mile long of green stuff, including seaweeds. So I'm pondering the idea of throwing a teaspoon or two into the cauldron when a clerk approaches & asks if she can help me. I'm deep in thought by then and ask the question that was on my brain at that precise moment.
"How are the vegetables in this powder processed?"
Clerk: *blink*blink* Processed?
"Sun dried, freeze dried, heat processed?" I say, like that will clear it right up.
She had no idea. Niether did I by the time I was done reading the bottle. I figure it might be just as bad as the over-processed powder the fish foods use, so I left it there. Somewhere tonight there's a clerk who knows far more about processing than she ever wanted to, but she seemed to find the point interesting anyway.
Then I found some canned seafoods and being a drug store, they had some unsalted varieties so I stocked up on those. Organic baby food peas were on sale so those went into the cart.
I was leaving and paused to look at the hair dryers - I need a new one. The one I liked was $44 though and I scoffed at paying so much. Walked right by the shower gel - soap will do until the next paycheque. Passed on the toothpaste - I still have that sample tube to use up. Finally arrived at the checkout counter, where the clerk rang up all sorts of fish food ingredients and I marvelled at my finds, not hesitating to hand over just under $140.
But yeah, toothpaste can wait.

I find it amazing as well...... I can easily go and spend a couple of hundred dollars on fishy stuff and not blink and then hesitate on buying myself things I could really use ......... Actually when it comes to my daughters and wife I have no problems opening up my wallet... its just my own needs go figure grrr
I am glad I am not the only one like that... makes me feel more sane.....

In no way should you mistake a similarity to me as an indication of sanity:twitcy: .
I'm telling your wife you said you have no problem opening your wallet for her. Have fun shopping this weekend Jerry!

I don't neglect personal hygiene entirely... although I've been known to resent having to spend perfectly good fish money on it...lol.

 I guess the fish don't really care but you might want to think twice before inviting guests for dinner.

Well technically who needs toothpaste? My Hubby and I use only a mixture of half and half baking soda and celtic sea salt (ground in my motar and pestle). When we brush our teeth with it we first dampen it with a spray bottle with 3% Food Grade H202. It is the best mixture I have ever used. Not to mention all the crap they put in toothpaste which caused my gums to bleed horrilbly for years but within 2 weeks of starting using this toothpaste the gums quite bleeding. So.... I would never recommend buying toothpaste! :spinny:
So just wondering Melody if you read the labels as closely when you are choosing products for yourself???

Good idea on the toothpaste thing!
I read the labels if the kid is going to eat it. I spent an hour in the juice isle when he got big enough to drink it. Finding juice that isn't laced with sugar is more of a challenge than it should be:rolleyes: . For me, I rarely read labels unless I'm trying to control my weight. Sad huh? The whole heat processing thing has definitly opened my eyes in regards to human food too though. The difference there is they have to label with nutrition content, whereas pet food doesn't have to list things like percent of daily vitamin requirements

Melody that is funny how we always care more about the ones we love than ourselves! I taught my kids to read labels when they were very young. When they wanted to buy some treat they would have to read the lablels first and decide for themselves if the stuff was any good for them. Amazing how often they would just put stuff back on the shelf without a fight.
The toothpaste recipe is good, the Dentist has been very pleased with our teeth but no longer asks us what we brush with cause he knows its nothing he recommends. We used to get harrassed by them about refusing the Flouride treatments too. But they quit that as well.
I also have a recipe for Hairspray if anyone uses that stuff! Last time I encountered some of that in public bathroom (with no evidence of the person who spayed in sight) I swear I could taste it for about 6 hours! It was awful. I actually went and apoligized to my husband for getting angry at him for him complaining everytime I sprayed hairspray. Kept telling him to get over it! Well now I'm with him on that subject. I never use thse stuff anymore, if I need it I just whip up a batch on the stove.

That label reading thing is brilliant!
I can't imagine making my own hairspray or toothpaste, but kudos to you. I can't take the flouride treatments - I get nauseated after from swallowing what little is left in my mouth I guess.

That's funny cause a few weeks ago I wouldn't have been able to imagine anyone making there own fish food! LOL
Making hairspray is no more complicated than boiling a quartered lemon in 2 cups of water until there is about 4 oz of liquid left, adding a bit of everclear as a perservative and there you have it... Hairspray.
Toothpaste is equaly as easy also just 2 ingredients. Or as simple as a drop of oil of oregano on the dampened brush.
But FISH FOOD! Holy heck that does get complicated!
Kid label reading, yes it works well I started them off looking for the 2 or 3 worst items like aspertame and MSG. Then taught them a few more things to look for and a few more.... Now they are obsessive label readers too, well the daughter is. Label reading is good because they see you doing it. They just don't understand what you are looking for.

Fish food is easy stuff, it's just ridiculously expensive & time consuming to do it the way I do it. Nutrition is part of the hobby for me though so I have fun with it. ::D:
