I haven't introduced her to any of the boys yet, I don't know if the eggs are viable. Maybe they were kept in mixed quarters before I got them.
Don't know, but this is my very first berried cray, I'm a little excited .

Congrat's! And the pic's turned out beautifully! So are you going to mate her up if this batch is infertile?

Yep, I bought 5 pairs for the very purpose of breeding them. Maybe they decided to start without me.

Right on!

Nice of her to come right up to the glass and show them off for you...

I dunno how similar shrimp are to crayfish, but with Japonicas, I believe the eggs are fertilized while still inside the body, and they don't get dropped to the abdomen until after.

I was snapping pictures for about 3 hours nonstop, tried every setting on the camera !

Those are the only shots that are focused, decent light and she decided to show them to me.
My guess is she now thinks she's a model, or she's blind from the camera flash.

I've been reading up on cray's all night, from what I can tell, some use internal fertilization and some carry the sperm in a packet on the abdomen and pass the eggs thru it while she arranges them in her swimmerets.

Don't yet know what process these ones use, but if they are viable and I can get them to successfully hatch and grow, I'll be dancing for days.

How exciting for you, and even if this batch doesn't work out, at least you know they're ready, willing and able to breed.

Its so much fun to get new creatures and have to do all of that studying - I eat that right up.

It's been absolutely ages and I have been wondering how you made out with your crays. They're so cool. Did you have any success breeding them?

I read the title and opened it up and thunk.. she doesn't look "berried"... she is still on top of the gravel.. then saw the little blueberries she was tagging along with her... lol

congrats on them reaching prime spawning age/condition.. now lets just hope they are viable eggs

Ahem... I may have caused a little confusion here:Embarassing: . Note the pictures were from Dec. 22nd. I had totally forgotten about the Crays and as the thread had not been updated, I started wondering. Me with my curious mind, I just had to know what the eventual outcome was... if those eggs were fertile or if not, what success Blaine had (if any) with the crays. So, Blaine??? ... do fill us in, please. Even if you were unsuccessful with them, maybe we can learn something from your efforts.

Unfortunately she dropped her eggs.
I think she needed to be separated from the others, I've read that they need to feel secure to keep the eggs.

I created a new tank layout for them about a month ago, lots of plants and caves to hide in.
I've seen a couple of matings, but so far no berried females yet. Fingers crossed !

OK... let's all cross our fingers that the new tank layout does the trick. It's a learning experience for all of us... however, you get to do the work... we just watch. :;): Best of luck and keep us updated.

I'm really hoping for a productive outcome, these little guys are hilarious to watch, tons of attitude as well.

They're really hard to get in Canada, so if breeding efforts work out, I'll try to find a few more to breed out a colony of them so I spread them around.
