Well, I finally figured out how to rearrange my place to get another tank in. And so I spent Sunday, moving 4 tanks and then rearranging everything and setting up my latest acquisition: a 29g BioCube. ::D:

http://www.canadianaquariumconnection.com/jb_images/biocube-flash.jpg

It's not aquascaped yet. I just stuck in a bunch of random plants, a piece of driftwood and gravel & a couple of sponges all from well established tanks Added a couple of fish and snails to feed the bacteria.

Willl post an update when I find time to do a proper job of planting.

Thanks Kat... the tank maybe... my hodge-podge of miscellaneous plants  Will work on that later (I'm just tired from all the work yesterday of moving furniture and 4 tanks to make room. And then of course today, cleaning up all the mess I made. :twitcy: )

Looks good Jay!
Moving and rearranging tanks is a lot of work.

Nice! I hate to admit my Son and I stopped by the fish store again this week (we went last week too, different fish store) to look at larger tanks! I kinda fell in love with a 16 gallon bow front glass. That may end up being Krinkles new home at some point in the future. Will have to talk to Hubby about that though. Not sure he's going to go for the MTS syndrome I've developed since hanging out here.

Thanks ladies. It was a lot of work but I not only get a new tank but like the arrangement of my apartment much better.

A 16g for Krinkle. That'd be one lucky betta. As for the MTS, I have no idea where you developed that. Couldn't possibly be from hanging around here.:nah: :Fibbing:

Here's an updated shot of the tank. It's far from complete but last night I tried to do a little better job at aquascaping. Plants need to grow & I want to add a little more gravel and another piece of driftwood but at least it looks a little better than it did initially.

Thanks... it's a work in progress. I have been just stuffing whatever plants I have in there to help with the cycle...it is a new tank despite all the contents (plants wood, gravel, filter media) having come from a well established tank thus the actual filter and surfaces are still establishing bacteria.

congrats Jay!
I can't believe you managed to squeeze another tank into your place....it was only a matter of time though.
what's that plan for this tank?

CACAdmin
Jul 21st 2008, 05:23 PM
Where there's a will, there's a way. :twitcy:

This tank will be my planted/leaf fish tank. Finally a tank with sufficient light to grow plants so I had best get my act together and actually learn how to aquascape. The leaf fish, though small at the moment, can grow up to 4 inches in size so need space. They cannot share tanks space with other fish as anything smaller becomes dinner.

Nice looking tank! Can't wait to see the new set up. Is there still room  for me to come and visit or do I have to sleep on the balcony?

CACAdmin
Jul 21st 2008, 06:44 PM
We'll just hang a hammock somewhere. Seriously, though, there's just as much room as when you were here last... you'd be surpised how creative I can get when I want to find room for another tank.

OK, you get first dibs Namor, but you may be a long time waitingr. They are supposedly difficult to breed and even more difficult to raise (not only do the parents eat the young but the young eat any sibblings smaller than they are.:wideeyed: )

where did you acquire these cool but aggressive little beasts?

I got them a while back from Big Al's.

That looks great! I would have a hard time giving that much space to a couple of fish... I begrudge poor Zap her 20G and even then she has to bunk with snails! But at least I know that so I don't buy fish that need to have that much room to themselves. It irks me when people decide that no matter what the literature or the experienced say, they're gonna be the ones to make it work because they want the fish and that's that.

CACAdmin
Jul 23rd 2008, 10:51 PM
Yes, this tank is a major indulgence but I knew I had to have at least a 20g dedicated to them. From what I've read, they apparently can have plecos as tankmates but I would assume it would have to be ones larger than the leaf fish (in the case of BN's obviously that would mean adults). I may try one pleco (after a period of acclimation) and observe carefully. Needless to say, if I note any aggression on behalf of the leaf fish or if the pleco appears stressed in any way, then the leaf fish will have the tank to themselves. I don't believe in 'making it work'... each fish has it's own specific requirements and it's important that those be met.

A L134 would be perfect for now ... hehehehehe .... at least they will look as if they are cousins .... all those colours ...

CACAdmin
Jul 23rd 2008, 11:39 PM
L134 is quite the striking pleco but I think I will try one of my white tipped BN's first. I think I've already overspent my fish budget for now.

Aye, talk about overbudgeting ... the man figures it has costs him about 4K for all the tanks, fishes, substrates, heaters, filters, medications and other 'stuff' that we had accumulated throughout these past 5 years ... all in the name of fish hobby ... LOL

CACAdmin
Jul 24th 2008, 11:46 AM
 I hear ya. I don't keep track. I don't think I want to...lol... 'cause on top of the fishies, tanks, etc, I add the various costs of running CAC. :spinny: But it's well worth it to have to privilege of hanging out with such a great bunch of people as the members here at CAC.:notworthy:

And how much do his indulgences cost? Can he make money from his indulgences like we can? Hmmm? Do you go out and party? Do you spend thousands on shoes every year like some women do? If you have to have an indulgence, this is a fantastic one to have.

You work hard, you NEED indulgences, the way I see it. It makes you a much more pleasant person to live with I'm sure.

amber2461
Jul 24th 2008, 05:59 PM
Actually his indulgences for power tools makes him more money than his salary, so, in actual fact his indulgences are justified.

Mine, on the other hand, other than taking up spaces and looking like either jungle / sparse looking tanks with whatever is in it ... LOL does not make any money.

We are not very social people, after work, it is straight home and then work again the next day ... very monotonous actually ... dull and boring ... that would be us... hehehehehehehe

@ Jay - Please do ... one eye is more than enough ... I have one eye on you too ... :P

But the key is that it keeps you from spending money on other frivolous stuff. ... and I know he enjoys the fish too.

That's why you have fish...you get to go home & kick back and relax and watch the fish... not of this getting dressed up to go out. Your fish won't care what you're wearing... they're just happy to see you.[/quote]

The tank keeps evolving. I put another piece of driftwood in about 10 days ago (which resulted in my BN pleco living in the filter  (See the One tough pleco (http://www.canadianaquariumconnection.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4677) thread). And decided that with the flow in the tank the driftwood became all but invisible with all the floating plants I have in there.

So tonight, I moved it around again. Will let plants figure out where they will reside and will likely make more adjustments. However, in the interim, here's a pic of what it looks like now. (It's not a great pic... wrong angle... will try to get a better one maybe tomorrow night.)

http://www.canadianaquariumconnection.com/jb_images/29g-2008-08-30.jpg

It does currently have four occupants (not counting a few red ramshorns) which are difficult to see in a full tank pic so here's another pic noting their locations:
Left to Right: Leaf Fish, White Tip BN, Albino BN, Leaf Fish

Everyone certainly looks happy. It must be a constant process to keep planted tanks looking balanced. Jungle tanks don't come with that concern so I'll count it as a point in their favour.::D:

CACAdmin
Aug 31st 2008, 06:38 PM
Balanced? Oh, is that what I'm supposed to be trying to achieve? :twitcy: I'm so used to jungle look that I don't really have much practice otherwise. This tank is top heavy with floaters (as you can see) because almost all the rooted plants are new cuttings. We'll see if I can actually succeed in creating some sort of order and balance... wish me luck. If I'm not successful, it'll just end up being another variation of the jungle look (which is ok too).

Oh Jay, I know you can do it. I used one of those rings with the suction cup that the feeder cones come with, wrapped the hornwort through it and stuck it in the corner. That way it will sort of stay in one place. I sent you a pic tonight. However I do not have the amount of hornwort that you do. I put it in the corner where anything floating seems to go to. That way it will not shade the other plants too much.

CACAdmin
Aug 31st 2008, 09:28 PM
Got the pic. The tank looks good with the hornwort in the corner and it's a great place for fry to hide out.

Melody
Aug 31st 2008, 10:51 PM
Heaven knows these feeder rings aren't good for much else so they'd make a good plant weight. They keep losing their styro on me and the suction cup doesn't stay attached very well. I'm going to get around to making my own one of these days.

I have one on the floor of two tanks and the ring stays upright sideways while the cup weights it down. One day the kid asked me if I was trying to teach the fish circus tricks.

Where he gets that sarcastic sense of haha, I'll never know.
