View Full Version : Grocery Items As Fish Food?

I recently enjoyed a conversation about using grocery store seafood for fish. I have fed numerous vegies of course, but the seafood always scares me. Now I'm starting to consider it after hearing the experiences of others.

I thought I would post here and ask people what food they've fed their fish which was purchased from the grocery store / market. :FishQuestion: Anything special you do to prepare it for fish consumption?

Thanks  .

Hmmm...I've used chopped up prawns and wild caught salmon. Fresh beefheart as well, assorted shellfish ie. clams, mussels. All my fish especially enjoyed the salmon, don't trust farmed salmon with potentially unwanted antibiotics. If you buy sockeye in season, you should be good to go.

They are messier foods so they would do a number to your water quality so I feed these just before a water change. Salmon I just chopped it fine. I don't worry about any parasites or pathogens - what I was told was that these critters do not transfer well from salt to fresh water.

Beefheart I don't do anymore, not sure how well fishies digest mammalian fat and anyways too messy to prepare. If you want seafood for your fishies but don't want to prepare it, I've had very good success with Ocean Nutrition Formula products:

Again, I feed it just before a water change.

Thanks, good to know. I worry about preservatives most, but I guess they'd be no more of a threat than pesticides on vegies so I don't know where my paranoia comes from...lol. Salmon is a great color enhancer.

I'm accustomed to messy foods because of the vegie recipes I cook up in the cauldron, and I use seafood prepared for fish for that but it gets pricey. I find that the key is in watching how much I put in the tank - I can't be as careless as I am with flakes, but its managable as long as none is left over. The vegies increase the fish waste somewhat but I figure that comes with having vegie-loving fish.

Beefheart is chosen because the fat can be trimmed and the 'meat' is dense so there isn't the concern of mammal fats. Some swear by it, others don't. I don't use it but that's more because its a pain than any other reason...lol...I do prefer to stick to seafood though, seems more natural. That's comming from someone who thinks its perfectly fine to feed them Bokchoy so I don't know how seriously I'd take that concern coming from me  .
